Good parts list?

Ok let me try this again.
I would like to try my first build, my budget is around $500 but a little over is possible.
I would consider it a gaming pc but I really only play Company of Heroes/Battlefield2 types of games.
I do a lot surfing, some dvd converting of torrent files and some cd buring.
I also like the idea of some how running a cable from pc to my tv to watch movies.

I am thinking of going intel at the time--- Core2 duo E8400 or 8500.
I will probably o.clock if needed.

I have 2x 2gigs of 667 ddr2 kingston ram.
I don't need a monitor,kb or mouse.
I have cable internet.
I also like the idea of going 64bit but at the time I only have xp and xp pro to install.

At newegg, it came to $704 before rebates and shipping, with no case.

There are $35 in rebates on that list.

To cut the cost down, you could get a cheaper video card: 9800gt would lower it by another $30 to $40.

If you need cheaper than that, then you might want to stay with xp that you already have, that would cut $99 from the price for vista.

Just be aware that if you try to overclock this cpu, you will be forced to overclock the ram as well.

Ideally, you would just get faster ram. That would give you more headroom to overclock.

If overclocking, I would aslo suggest a better heatsink.

And one more FYI, overclocking will void your warrenty.

If you only have 667 ram, I'd get a 1066 bus processor such as one of the E7xxx series.

parts list update

Hey Guys,as usual money is taking it's toll on build speed. So far these are the only parts I have that are new.

ASUS P5Q Pro motherboard & Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale (EO) stepping
CoolerMaster Storm Viper

Looking for good or best G card/Ram/Psu/hdd & optical drives.

If need be I still have the 667 ram that is brand new but will only use that if I don't have to build 'down' to it. Make sense?

Not sure which is better w/my mobo...ati or nvidia... sli or cross fire?/ hd4870 or ?

As stated before just I play games such as bf2 and possibly future fps games along with some video encoding.

Thanks

you might want to look at DDR2 800 (i think its cheaper also):

Memory for the build?

Hey guys, with the p5q pro mb & e8400 cpu would it be worth it to get 1066 ram or just stay with getting 800? I'm not really sure how to know what voltage ram is ok either.

Still have not picked the Gcard yet nor the psu??? i'm at 1280x960 resolution on a 19" sony tft.
Ofcourse as all of us would like to play bf2/ cod4 or whatever at max settings is there a reasonably priced card (ati) that would work for now... and maybe upgrade later?

I just received my case yesterday...OMG the CM Storm Sniper is freakin huge!

My mobo & cpu arrive tomorrow.

These items are in my cart for now:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136320

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...t=Combo.160135

Still going to add another optical to my cart tonight.

So Ram?/ Psu/ Gcard suggestions?

So much for a $500 budget!

If you still have your old DDR2-667 ram, that should work fine as long as you aren't overclocking. A good inexpensive card for your setup would be the HD4830 (practically identical to the HD4850 but has reduced amount of shaders and clock speeds; should let you play most games at max settings at that resolution[1280x960]): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102803. A good PSU for your build would be the 500W Antec Earthwatts: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817371007

Acceptable list adjustments?

Alright men and ladies, I'm hoping this list will pass the expert scrutiny of you fellow (MECHaniacs).

I know.. I think I blew my budget by a dollar or 500...lol but then hey... you only turn 50 once!

So with the below list will be c/m sniper case w/E8400.

WD cav black 500 sata
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136320

Sapphire 1g hd4870
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102815

PC p&c 610w psu
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817703005

Corsair (2x2gb) ddr2 800
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145184

Asus 22x dvd
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...t=Combo.160139

Any further thoughts or concerns?

Not too concerned if something is overkill as long as it is all compatable.

As always please be frank and teach me with your reasons one way or the other.

Bill

Much Thanks

Awsome...
Thanks TomToon,
I'm guessing that I'm not the first and certainly wont be the last to wind up spending double the budget! lol
I still haven't made up my mind on the os situation... I have the Windows 7 64bit iso but not sure if at this stage it will work flawlessly with my build.
Think I should get a Vista version or just use xp 32 bit for now?
Not really sure how the 64bit deal improves things.

Thanks again for all your feedback!

64-bit is so you can use 4GB ram or more.
Just get vista hp 64-bit.
windows 7 is in beta stage so it might not work flawlessly
