In step one of the tutorial on this site, it says I need a systems disc and the device drivers that come with it. Where do I get a systems disk? Does it come with the OS? It also says I need an OS. Which do I choose? This computer will be used for gaming and basic student uses. I would like to make it windows, but I just wanted someone to tell me a good choice that is compatible with my build. Will they all work I just need to decide between student or professional etc...? It also says I need drive cables. Do these not come with the hardware? Thank you so much everyone, I am ready to get this started! |

That is a very nice motherboard, all your device drivers and cables should come with the motherboard, so you are good to go there. Order windows vista premium 64 bit. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16832116488 i would consider this video card for that board based on the board chipset http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102801 make sure you follow the stickey thread on building your pc |

I would suggest looking at an Asus MOBO (the P5Q's are very popular) and you could drop the RAM to PC6400.
The retail CPU will come with thermal paste. |

You don't need PC2-8500 unless your overclocking.
So get this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231122 $44.99 I agree with not_important about the P5Q: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131295 $118.99 What is your main use going to be? If its gaming you'd be better off with the E8400/E8500 as dual-cores are better for gaming. Last edited by tomtoon; 02-08-2009 at 10:33 AM. |

actually, I assume he went on the motherboard website and chose the memory from the compatibility list. that board likes that type of memory. whats wrong with that board? it is a high quality board and has got some really good reviews. I like the build
here is one of many http://www.extremetech.com/article2/...2335930,00.asp Last edited by jdeb; 02-08-2009 at 11:55 AM. |

Nothing wrong it, as you should know the standard recommendation is the P5Q.
Plus everyone says DDR2 800 unless overclocking. |

The reason to recommend ddr2-800 instead of the ram listed is because unless you overclock that processor, it will not really give any benefit.
And since ddr2-800 is usually cheaper, it just makes more sense to get that instead.

i only assumed he wanted the different ram for overclocking. the board is really an enthusiast board and is good for overclocking. that is a very nice board in all aspects, maybe the best board for the money. most people that buy that board are gamers and do not want to spend the additional money for a i7 setup. i didn't say anything in regards to the memory selection because one, it was a approved part number and two the nature of the board. he obviously did his homework or got extremely lucky?... my guess is that he did the research and was also enamored by the nvidea card because it's all the rage even though the 4870 will be a better card for him and the board.

The only motherboard I've had to RMA so far has been an Asus motherboard (I've used 50+ motherboards so far). I haven't had any problems with Gigabyte, Intel and MSI boards (I've also used one PCChips motherboard for an old computer, but it was overpriced and didn't provide great performance, but worked for what it was being used for); as long as you read the reviews and know what you are buying, most brands are fine.

If you were buying a 1333 FSB processor with plans to overclock it, I'd recommend DDR2-1066. However, with a 1066 FSB processor, DDR2-800 is all you need, even when overclocking.
Tomtoon, we'd appreciate it if you worded your recommendations differently. You are simply parroting what everyone else around here is saying with very little experience yourself, and trying to come across as an experienced expert. When you get your first build ordered and done, then you can make recommendations from experience instead of hearsay. |

Most of the quads are 1333. However, the Q6600 is 1066. This is why I prefer to spend a bit more and get a Q9xxx.
