New Build CD/DVD Problem
Hi,
I just put together my new system and powered up. As soon as the splash screen shows, my DVD burner's tray opens. It stays open and when I close it, it will again open and stay open. I put in a different drive and it stays closed. But when I open the drive, it closes by itself very fast and then stays closed. What the ****? Any ideas. Here is my new build. That's weird.
The only reason I can see it closing quick is that it's looking for a disk. Besides that, does it work correctly?

I haven't even loaded Windows yet. I am trying to figure out why the problem with the Optical Drives first. Could it be a bad ribbon cable? I am using the new one from my Gigabyte MB.

A little more info... With the Sony drive, it opens when computer powers up. I then put Vista DVD in the drive and close it. It opens up again without reading the disk.
With the older DVD drive, when computer powers up it opens and closes automatically very fast. Not enough time to even put in a disk. Cmos sees the drives... Both drives set as CS. Also tried setting them as MS. |

I assume you used a new IDE cable that came with the MOBO? You could try a different IDE cable or try an SATA drive.

Maybe with the Sony drive it's operating as cd drive.( generic driver?) therefore not properly reading the Vista DVD.

Yeah I thought of that... I tried another IDE cable with the same results with both drives. Will look for updated drivers and bios updates also. If that doesn't work, I will most likely order a sata drive.

The funny thing is, that both drives don't even give a chance to read any disk... the sony just ejects as soon as I close the tray and the other drive opens and closes very fast. I did shut down the computer and open the older dvd drive manually and put in a disk with no luck. Just plain weird....

If you go for an SATA drive I would suggest a different brand than Sony. LG's are my first choice and Lite-On my second.
