Hi! I've decided to build my first computer. I've had input in prior builds but mainly limited to things I wished to achieve with the computer rather than the actual construction of it. I know what I want vaguely, but am looking for as much advice as possible in choosing what parts and what system I want it running.
Right now I've got a PC with specs that look like the following: Dell Dimension DIM5100 Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.8GHz 2.79GHz, 1.00GB of RAM NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT 150GB HDD, 300GBHDD That's what I know of my system. ![]() What I'd like to do is the following: First, I want to get a new case. I'd prefer a case with some kind of LED lighting, and if possible, I want it to run quietly. Second, I am building this in order to give myself an excellent platform for PC gaming. (I am an avid PC gamer and will play almost any genre from Starcraft to World of Warcraft to Unreal Tournament.) Third, I would like to keep the budget down IF POSSIBLE. I have almost no conception of where to start, and don't really know any tech-savvy people. ** EDIT ** I've come up with the following build. Case: Antec 1200 OS: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64-bit for System Builders Motherboard: ASUS RAMPAGE FORMULA LGA 775 Intel X48 ATX Intel Motherboard Audio: Included ^ ^ ^ ^ CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 3.0GHz 12MB L2 Cache LGA 775 95W Quad-Core Processor Video: MSI N260GTX-T2D896-OCv2 GeForce GTX 260 896MB 448-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card Video: MSI N260GTX-T2D896-OCv2 GeForce GTX 260 896MB 448-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card RAM: OCZ Reaper HPC Edition 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Power: CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply Optical: Sony Optiarc Black 22X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 8X DVD+R DL 22X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 12X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2MB Cache IDE 22X DVD±R DVD Burner Harddrive: Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive TOTAL: $1719.89 Last edited by Drath; 02-22-2009 at 09:37 PM. |

Sorry, meant to include that in the original post, but I haven't quite decided yet. I would like to spend less than $2000 but might bump it up to $2500.
That includes EVERYTHING, because as of now I am unsure if I will recycle things in my current rig. **EDIT** Everything does not include the monitor, speakers, keyboard, or mouse. Those I have/can purchase at added expense. Last edited by Drath; 02-22-2009 at 06:36 PM. |

Eek. Sorry, it's the first time I've done this.
What I meant with the budget is thus: Base of $2000 unless there is a VERY good reason to bump it up a little, in which case I would be willing to spend $2500. That needs to include case and guts, but does not need to include monitor and/or peripherals. I've got a monitor, joystick, sound system, and keyboard/mouse, that I like already, and don't want to change that yet. Is that any better? |

With that budget, you can do a lot.
MB: Asus P5Q CPU: E8500 Ram: 2x2gb DDR2-800 HD: Western Digital 1tb caviar black sata oem DVD: lite-on, asus, or lg dvd burner sata Video: nvidia 295 PSU: Corsair 750 Case: your choice OS: Vista Home Premium 64 oem That's a basic list. If in the US, you can check out newegg.com for all those parts.

What would you guys say are the pro's/con's of each build?
And for the cases, I'm looking at either Antec 900 or 1200 because they're such gorgeous cases. |

Here is a good build for around $1600 with all the necessary parts and OS (32-bit in this case since it will use up all the ram and is a good amount easier to work with than the 64-bit version); I would go with the Antec 1200 since it has enough room for large video cards:

So, after looking at the three builds that were put in front of me, I've put together a list that might seem a bit.. Adventurous. Here we go!
Case: Antec 1200 OS: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64-bit for System Builders Motherboard: ASUS RAMPAGE FORMULA LGA 775 Intel X48 ATX Intel Motherboard Audio: Included ^ ^ ^ ^ CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 3.0GHz 12MB L2 Cache LGA 775 95W Quad-Core Processor Video: MSI N260GTX-T2D896-OCv2 GeForce GTX 260 896MB 448-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card Video: MSI N260GTX-T2D896-OCv2 GeForce GTX 260 896MB 448-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card RAM: OCZ Reaper HPC Edition 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Power: CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply Optical: Sony Optiarc Black 22X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 8X DVD+R DL 22X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 12X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2MB Cache IDE 22X DVD±R DVD Burner Harddrive: Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive TOTAL: $1719.89 Thoughts? |

If you want quiet, the antec 1200 is not the case for you. I have the 900, and it's a noticable "hum" from it. I believe the fans are on low as well.
If it's a gaming build, then a quad isn't really advantagous, and a faster dual core would be a better move, and save you money. Most here don't recommend sli. If you still want to go sli, and use those video cards, then you need to change the power supply. A corsair 1000 would work: http://www.slizone.com/object/slizone_build_psu.html Would still go with either a lite-on, asus, or lg dvd burner. |

i would think one card is all you need but two is better I suppose, you might need to bump up the power supply though.
I am not sure on the memory, I prefer gskill for ddr2 800. the case is popular and seems like a nice one but I was not overly impressed with it when I used one last year but it did the job. |

The powersupply is easy to bump up. Wasn't entirely sure how much I would actually need but 750W sounded like it would be enough.
I wanted the quad because I run a TON of accessory programs when playing some games, like Curse Client for WoW and EVEMon for EVE, along with keeping an internet window open while playing online. For the case, I'm okay with a bit of noise, my computer now is actually fairly loud but the chance of noise outweighs the fact that I love the way the case looks. Can you link a reliable DVD? I wasn't really sure what I needed there besides DVD/DVD Burner. I chose that memory because I wanted to get 64-bit Vista and it definately utilizes the extra gig of RAM. And newegg.com recommended it as a top-seller and most customer reviews were pretty positive. Last edited by Drath; 02-23-2009 at 07:18 AM. |

If you still go two cards, then the antec 1200 might be nice. If you go one, then look at the 900 instead.
For ram, I have used and recommend g. skill and corsair. I also like adata and mushkin. Haven't really heard much either way about ocz myself. For dvd, the one masaki linked to is nice: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106286 EDIT: If you plan on doing a lot of multitasking, then you might be better off with a i7 build. |

Ok, so I'll look into the RAM options, I've switched the DVD and PSU out for the ones recommended, now the only thing I'm not certain on..
Shall I go with Vista or XP? |

Vista I personally think is better, but it is up to you personally which one you choose

Settled on a G.Skill RAM set. But it puts me at an extra 4gigs of RAM. Is there an XP version that will support 3gigs+?
I guess that's my real question. I believe I could cope with Vista but I am WAY more comfortable with XP at this point in time. |

To see and use 4gb of ram, you need a 64bit operating system. There is a xp 64, but the driver issue with them said not been that good. Vista 64 on the other hand has a lot better driver support, especially with newer peripherals.
You can still use a 32 bit operating system with 4gb without problems. The OS just won't see it all. If you're comfortable with xp, then get xp. Personally, I went with vista home premium 64. But that was my personal choice. |

Okay. I can live with Vista I guess. But the entire RAM issue brought the fact that my RAM cards and my CPU have differing DDR. RAM is DDR2 and CPU is DDR3. Will this be a problem?

I think you mean the video card, and the ram are different.
That's ok, they have nothing to do with each other, and will not affect performance if they are the same or different. |
