I've decided to make my own build for the upcoming windows 7 (YAY!!! EVERYONE REJOICE!!!) anyways, i went out and got a case, it is now sitting beside me begging for some goods and i am turning to you guys for a little input
i would like this box to do some average gaming nothing over the top, coh,hl2,css,tf2, future rts', video editing, nothing major just home movies and maybe some webcasting, 64-bit, 3-6 gb of ram i would think, i'm kind of stuck on hard drive space, the case is an NZXT Airflow king http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16811146047 it has two 4 harddrive bays with one fan each, is it better to put say 3x 500gb drives or a 1.5 tb? I notice a lot with the pos that i have now, acer aspire e360, the C drive is partitioned and if i access to much on the non-windows drive xp slows down for a few secs i already have dual-monitor going so i'm not gonna give that up, would this card the GeForce 9800 http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...153&CatId=1839 suffice my needs? what is the advantage of putting 2 in? if need be i can ad another later i guess.. blu-ray is a must in this day and age and LG has never done me wrong so they get to join the party too http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...rkey=GGC-H20LK (am i right in thinking that this will burn and read both cd and dvd, and read blu-ray only?) i am also stuck in the motherboard+processor+ram department... i guess the stupid thing would be to not go with an i7, i would like to go with intel, any predictions on when the i7 will go down in price seeing as i don't really need it at this moment? oh right i almost forgot! PSU, ummmm.... SLI ready i guess and i would guess 750-800w? or do i need more? Thank you so much guys i hope you can steer me in the right direction!

Heya Lanks, your thread must have fallen through the cracks.
What is your overall budget for the computer? Hard drive setup is up to you. We recommend starting with one big drive. You can always add another later if you need to. The Geforce 9800GTX+ is a great card for the price. Do you already have an HDCP compliant monitor? You'll need it to watch Blu-Ray movies. I assume your monitor is already high resolution to handle 1080p. If it is not, Blu-Ray won't really look very good. That LG drive looks like it Reads Blu-Ray, DVD, CD and Writes to just DVD. You may want to get a drive that burns CDs too. We haven't been recommending i7 systems just yet, since they are so new. You can pick up a solid setup with an Asus P5Q, E8500 CPU and 4GB of DDR2-800 for a great price. Skip SLI, its not worth the hype. Its much mroe economical to upgrade the card later. Go with a good quality PSU from this list: What Power Supply should I get? How many Watts? Who made it? Guide Inside Corsair units are my first choice. Something around 600 watts will be fine. Hope that helps.

you can build an i7 if you want but I think the chipsets are going to get better maybe by the end of summer. I have done a couple of i7 builds and they are not worth the extra money in my mind. i think it depends more of what you are using a computer for, in order to justify the extra expense and based on your use, I wouldn't shell out the extra at this time. I think the asus rampage or the foxconn renaissance are the best x58 board's as of right now. the asus pt6 is a stripped down version of the rampage. I am waiting for a good, solid, stable middle stream (non x58) motherboard for under 200 bucks. most of the boards are geared towards gamers or overclockers. and exceed the 250.00 range.
I think the best intel board for the money is the gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128358 or the foxconn P45A-S http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813186148 or the asus intel P5Q Pro http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131299 match any of them up with a core 2 quad Q6600 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115017 or a core 2 duo E8400 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115037 and 4 gigs of this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231122 and my friend, you will have one smokin computer ![]() The card you chose is fine, forget the sli or dual card... you don't need it... consider this card though, it is great http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102770 Last edited by jdeb; 03-07-2009 at 09:29 PM. |

I would like to keep it around $1000
i have an Acer AL2223W and X223W as monitors i now the X223W is hdcp compliant, the other i am unsure yes i agree a cd burner is a must for me, i could probably just swap it out of the computer i'm using right now i like the asus board you guys picked out i think i'll go with the simple p5q though, the 8400 looks solid and the reviews are positive i think i'll use corsair for the ram http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...139&CatId=3412 thanks for the help Last edited by Lanks; 03-07-2009 at 10:00 PM. Reason: i don't have $10000 |

Blu-Ray is far from a must. In fact, its future is not looking well. DVD quality is more than sufficient.
LG DVDRW's are very good readers and burners. |
