updating an old first build. recommend CPU fan?
well, it's been 3 years and my first build is still running strong! still very fast and responsive. the only thing is that a fan has become noisy. i thought it was the PSU. but then it might be the processor fan. i can't really narrow it down.
regardless, i've decided to replace both. i've already gotten a new Corsair PSU. now i need a new CPU fan/heatsink. i have a Pentium D 940 3.2GHz. any good brand recommendations? I'd like to keep it around $40 or less--if that's possible. a quiet fan is what i'm looking for. thanks in advance. |

I have one of these on a E7200. It works very well and is quiet. $30 & free shipping.

thanks for the rec guys.
is there a list like the PSU list of good/bad brands for heatsink/cpu fans? i guess the reputable brands for PSU can translate over to heatsinks as well? any other recs? i might go check out Fry's to see if they have anything. but Newegg probably has the best deals. |

tomshardware does a comparison of CPU heatsinks every once in a while, thats how I found mine. I use the coolermaster 120mm, not only will it fit my AMD system it will fit most intel sockets as well.
I did replace the stock fan with a 110 cfm silverstone. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835103040

I've been using the AC 7 Pro: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835186134
for about 2 years on each of my Pentium D builds; it runs really quiet and cool. My Pentium D 920 (@ 3.2GHz) runs at 29C load and 22C idle with an ambient temp of 18C with the fan running at 1000RPM; cannot hear the fan at all.
