Question First time builder, budget computer

My budget is $700 or less. Just wanted to get that out of the way first

Hello, I am trying to build myself a new computer. I plan to use it for image editing (not video) and moderate gaming. I don't really want the latest and greatest for gaming. I just want to play mostly non-graphically intense games at a resonable speed. I am very new when it comes to building computers.

The main thing I need help with is knowing whether or not all the parts are compatiable and if they will all fit in the case. I might have missed a few key parts to building a computer, so if I missed any parts please feel free to tell me.

I prefer to keep it Intel but I will change if there is somthing else cheaper, and still works moderately good.

I am not reusing anything from any old computers, except for the OS(window's xp)
So I am basicly building this thing from the ground up.

If anybody has any reconmodations on how to make this cheaper, feel free to tell me

It might seem sorta weird that I listed every single thing that is going into this PC but I want to make sure that every single thing is compatable.

Feel free to give me any recommendations on this build.

should be at 700.00 with shipping... that is a nice motherboard by the way... a little over 700.00 if you go with the nicer video card

the card you chose is a agp card, go with this one...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814127415

or this is good too for the price http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102726

you could use ddr2 800 memory, since you a re not overclocking... this is a tested and approved ram for this board. you should not need more than 2gb sense your using xp

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820208283

the case you chose has a crap power supply, pick the case and a separate power supply, very important on choosing a good power supply

Jdeb made some good changes.

On top of those, I would suggest that you don't need the dvd drive if you already have a dvd burner on your list.

Most people don't need a floppy drive anymore either. I don't bother with them on my builds.

I would get this ram: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145184

And this hard drive: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136320

I use this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16825122003

Will the DVD/CD-burner play CD-roms and DVD's just like a regular CD-rom/DVD drive would?
If it does then I'll just take out the drive.
But I'm not sure if a burner reads CD/DVD's

Thanks for all the suggestions

Most newer computers can usually get by without a floppy drive.

It doesn't hurt to have. It might be needed to install drivers if you're using xp and sata hard drives and not setting them in ide mode. (Not positive.)

Could also be used possibly if setting up raid. (Also not sure)

Also might be needed for some motherboards to flash the bios, though the asus boards that I have flashed allowed me to use a usb flash drive.

that motherboard has dual bios rom chips which is really cool in the event you corrupt one from a improper flash or virus, very nice feature. They have whats called a q-flash utility that can use a usb drive for flashing the bios. So he does not need a floppy if thats all he would be using it for. I would also recommend that if the computer is working fine, there is no need to flash the bios.

How do I use a USB drive to flash the bios? What does flashing the bios mean? And where do I this type of USB drive?

What is ide mode and is it any worse then a mode that I could only use if I had a floopy disk drive.(tell me if I need to clarifiy on my grammer with that sentence)

What is a raid?(there are alot of meanings to that word and I don't know which one you mean)

Would it be hard to put a floppy disk drive in a few months after this build is complete, when I have more money? In case I ever needed a floppy disk drive after I boot it up.

Thanks for all your help so far.

EDIT: Just looked at the price of the floppy disk drive again noticed it only cost 7.00 little more if you count shipping. Unless I am really tight on space I don't see how it would be bad just to buy the floppy disk drive.also is there a reson I can't edit my orginal post?Just wondering

you would only need to flash the bios if you were having problems... here is a good definition of what the bios is and performs...
http://isp.webopedia.com/TERM/B/BIOS.html

i like to put a floppy drive in, I use them a lot. I have a ton of files saved on them but today they really are not being used due to flash drives. I gave you a link to the manual which you can download and get familiar prior to ordering. Look in the index and you will see the page number where it describes the q-flash utility. It is very straight forward and would enable you to save 7.00 if you do not have any files or media saved on a floppy.

Hmm I guess I don't need one. the only reson I thoight I would need one is because I thought that there were certin things you could only do with a Floppy disk that were vital to using a computer.

I'll look at the manual later because it is not loading right now.

EDIT: Will Linux work with this becuse I found out that the OS I have came with a gateway and might not be an actual OS that can be downloaded to mutipule computers?Since we are talking about the whole floppy disk thing I want to make sure that I can use that without needing a floppy disk.

I want to update my orignal post but for some reson the EDIT button dissapered.

It should, you can download a live cd for the most popular linux distributions. the manual is a large file, it does take a few minutes, the sitre is a little slow tonight....

I would budget $90 for a OEM copy of XP Home. You will need a floppy to install XP if you set the SATA controller to AHCI mode (recommended).

I changed a few things namely the RAM,HDD,and Video Card.

I'm keeping the floppy disk drive just in case I need it for something. I'll probley not be useing one in later builds but since I'm so new to computers in genaral it would probley just be more safe to have it and not need it then to need it and not have it.

I have a few things I am not sure of:

1. Will all of these parts work with Linux(Debian), because I cannot afford an OS untill Windows 7 gets released.

2. Are all of these parts compatble?

3. Will all of these parts fit in the case?

4. Is the PSU strong enough to support this build?

Thanks, once I have the answers to these questions I think I'll be good
