Hi New system
Hi I am building a new system (slowly piece by piece)
am in Australia and at the moment our exchange rate is not very good. I will build it myself in stages and would like to know the better items to get which are not the newest things. I want advice of what case and power supply to get for a good cpu which can support 4 MB ram, a small (160-250 GB) HDD, 2 DVD drives, one or 2 good video cards and I would like some recommended motherboards for a good/decent/not obsolete or best of the best. cheers Stephen |

Can you give a budget? Or what your looking to spend for each item.
Otherwise I could just list good but expensive products. |

No sorry I can't give a budget.
I want some ideas on a system that has a very good mother board with good cpu (which can be exchanged later) capable of utilising at least 4 GB ram, ability to add a good vid card and a small HDD (250GB) as well as 2 DVD drives (one burner one rom). I just want some good ideas that are not over the top, my budget is flexible and This will take a few months. Our tax year ends in June, so will get some extra money then if required. Just please give me ideas on a case, power supply, motherboard and cpu, I can source the rest. TIA Stephen btw I don't need everything tomorrow. |

Honestly, if you're not buying now, I wouldn't worry till about a month out. Technology changes fast, and what isn't a good deal today will be tomorrow.
We can recommend a build around one chipset, but when you're ready to build, a different one might make more sense. Also, we highly discourage getting pieces over a period of time. It's easier to trouble shoot and return parts if you get them at the same time.

Thanks shadowpr
I have had a look today at our local comp market (new and used stuff, but I am only looking at new) and a guy advised me on this motherbaord ASUS M3N78-VM. After describing what I wanted this is what he suggested, I am not looking at getting high end products because i do know that technology keeps changing and in 6 months time there is a huge reduction in price of today's "in thing". So I am planning on getting something reasonable in today's terms in the future. This mobo was recommended because I don't want to buy a video card in my initial buy, it can take up to 8GB of RAM, has inbuilt vid and sound and is ready for the next AMD chips that are coming, but can also take the AMD Athlon X2 7750. I can also get the full sized mobo not mini if this works out cheaper for the case etc. I would like to know what case and power supply I would need and a good type of 2GB RAM. TIA Stephen |

A micro ATX board will fit in a regular ATX case. Get a case that you like, but make sure you get a quality power supply (hint - quality power supplies are not cheap).

thanks glc,
but I need to know what wattage power supply I require. Also just read that Windows 32 bit OS may only recognise 3GB of RAM on this board. If this is true then I need to go back to the drawing board and find another mobo. I want something that will take today"s cheaper stuff and tomorrow's good stuff. I hope someone can help. TIA Stephen |

Its not a mobo limitation, its an OS limit. Go ahead and put 2x2 in, it will use all it can.
This is the cheapest PSU I think I'd get: http://www.scorptec.com.au/computer/31251-bp500ub |
