components for new pc under 300$
hello all,
recently my old pc broke down so i decided to build a new pc. im on a pretty tight budget(<300$) and since i already have one new motherboard lying around(which i got 2 years ago), i figured i would build around the motherboard. keep in mind that because the motherboard is fairly old model, it only can support intel dual core(not dual 2 core) and pci express x16(not pci express x16 2.0). motherboard- intel D955XBK Processor- Intel Pentium E5200 Wolfdale 2.5GHz 2MB L2 Cache LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819116072 $69.99 Video card- EVGA 256-P2-N761-TR GeForce 8600 GTS 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130394 $54.99 Hard drive- Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3250410AS 250GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148262 $54.99 Ram- Kingston 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820134046 $22.99 Power supply- Antec earthwatts EA500 500W Continuous Power ATX12V v2.0 SLI Certified CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817371007 $69.99 Total: $272 any suggestions? im not expecting a powerful rig but it should be able to play at least cod4. thanks in advance.

If you can, I would go for this card:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814140095 Same price after $10 rebate. Much better performance than the 8600GTS and no extra 6-pin power connector required. Also, try to get DDR2-800 ram. It's not much more and will allow that processor to run the memory at 1:1. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820134117

That motherboard does not support that processor.
http://www.intel.com/support/motherb.../CS-026574.htm Newegg does not have any compatible processors. Here's the best deal I can find: http://store.memorylabs.net/inped915duco1.html That's OEM, you will need a heatsink/fan. http://store.memorylabs.net/inp4lg4pcpuf.html Rev, that would be 2:1, not 1:1, you still have AMD on the brain . That board can't do it. 667 is the right ram.

I would stay away from Pentium D if building a new computer, $75 for an OEM Pentium D is not worth it at all, most if not all current dual cores are much faster than the Pentium D and cost less. I would go for a complete build with a new dual core; here is a good parts list for under $300:

Why are you recommending 667 speed ram on an AM2? That's going to hurt performance.

If you are think the benefits of going with DDR2-800 are worth the cost, here is a good, inexpensive set of 2GB DDR2-800 ram: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820211363 |

Does he need an O.S though, if so that will put the price up to at least $380 or around that...

If you already have that motherboard and you have a 3.2 Ghz Pentium 4, you might as well use them. Sure, performance will not be up to the latest standards, but it WILL work. You can put a PCI-E 2.0 card in that board and it WILL work.
I would go with your original parts list (except for the processor and maybe the video card) and build it. You can always upgrade the motherboard, processor, and ram later when you save some more bucks, all you will be out is the 25 bucks for the ram. The rest of those components will be suitable to carry over. I don't know how demanding COD4 is, but my grandson is playing WoW fine on a 2.4 GHz P4 with a 7600GS AGP card and 1gb ram. |
