40A 12v rail...

I just bought a xfx gtx260 core 216 black edition, and it says 40A on the 12v rail. My psu, Rosewill rp550-2 says 2 12v rails at 18A. so basically i'm screwed until i find a new psu?

Yep. Rosewills are not good quality to begin with anyway.

This is an excellent buy right now:

You won't get a better deal or a PSU for your needs for less than the Corsair TX750, thats your best choice.

I actually don't mind ocz psu's.

I haven't pushed them with a powerful video card either though.

89 bucks for a 750w is a excellent deal, I would jump at it if I could.

I have never been impressed with OCZ PSU's. Every one of them I've used have been had loud windy sound from the fan and by far not enough power connectors, and poor arrangement of the few there are. I myself would stay away from them.

I've been pretty happy with OCZ units; the voltages were consistent throughout different types of load and didn't have any problems with connections or fan noise.

The EA650 is excellent, its made by Seasonic just like the Corsair. OCZ makes their own PSU's now.

Bottom line, you bought a high end power sucking video card - and you have to pay to play.

well keeping new spring sales in mind this is what i'm getting:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817703009

pc power & cooling (one of the best, no?) 750 watt. It appears to be about the same caliber as the Corsair 750 watt. Both 60A single 12v Rail, $20 rebate, but the pc P&C one is 10 dollars cheaper, is labeled to be quieter, and doesn't come with quite so many cables (i think 2 fewer, but i'll take it since i won't be using all of 'em by far!)

thanks for the help guys, i'm glad i didn't 1) run that card on my rosewill or 2) buy a wimpy psu. I'll probably buy it this weekend - the sale runs out on monday next week.

now all i have to figure out is how to hide all those cables in an nzxt apollo - It has no Cable holes! :P

The PC P&C is essentially the same unit as the Corsair. If cable management is an issue, get a Corsair 520HX modular.

Cool

thanks for the tip, but i need more than 520W according to XFX, i think 630+ is preferred. Or will it not matter since the 12V rail is 54A? I just noticed also that it is combo'd with an evga gtx 260 with lower power reqs...

The 520HX is a top-notch PSU and should run the GTX 260 just fine as long as the rest of the PC isn't also too power hungry. If you want to be reassured though, an HX620 or TX650 will be good for a while. There is a new Enermax out which gets 85% effiency and it's 80 Plus Silver certified too, but it's more expensive. I'm gonna say your best PSU to choose from would be the TX650 though, because of it's single rail.

hmmm, I still think i'll go with the one i listed rather than shell out so much more for a lesser spec'd one just for modular cables. I'll just spend a good hour or two to hide them. It's more fun that way ... unless you can really convince me..

edit: on top of that the 520HX/620HX don't have single 12v rails which is better right?

No, but PC Power and Cooling is based on an older, outdated design. It's not all it used to be hyped up to be. OCZ bought it and never developed new power supplies.

Single 12v rail isn't always better. A sufficiently balanced dual to quad 12v rail PSU is just as good or better than a single 12v rail.

And that little 80mm fan, who uses that anymore? It will sound like a jet taking off when that PSU gets hot. As far as I'm (and even OklahomaWolf and JonnyGURU are) concerned, a Corsair 750TX is leaps and bounds ahead of the PCP&C 750w.

EDIT: Some others to look at:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817226008 - Sigma 750w, built off same platform as Corsair 750w
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817611008 - Tuniq 750w, as far as I'm concerned even better than the Corsair
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139006 - The Corsair 750w 750TX.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817815002 - A 750w Xigmatek, also same platform as the Corsair.

wow! thanks! You're a really big help. Those ones listed are great suggestions. I was under the impression that pc power & cooling were basically the same as corsair's and others. I might just go for one that's cheaper because it has more than one rail but more expensive for modular cables. I saw OCZ's Modstream looks good, what do you think about those?

thanks again

by the way the off-line cooling on that tuniq one sounds smart, why didn't anyone think of that before?

darn the one i want is sold out! I couldn't find it at tigerdirect or zipzoomfly either!
I'm thinking about the ones you listed. What do you mean that they are built off the same platform as corsair? do they just use the same design or are they made by the same factory?

on another note: since you posted a 750s xigmatek, what do you think about the 650W version?

If they are built off the same platform as Corsair, that means they are built by Seasonic.

Oh crap, it's built from Channel Well. Same as HX series, but isn't modular. My bad.
Ths Sigma is also CWT.

Since when are the Corsair HX's built by CWT? The UL number on my 520HX and in the pictures at Newegg crosses to Seasonic - E104405.

ahhh! I'm confused >.< is channel well good or bad, and which ones do they make?

I'm thinking the xigmatek 650 or 750 because they have good reviews and are modular. both have 80 plus and are inexpensive. Anandtech gave the 650w version their 600-700w editor's choice.

If the corsair ones are the same fab as the others, how do they get away charging sooo much more money?

thanks.

CWT makes some good ones, and they make some bad ones.

CWT makes the TX750
and HX1000
Seasonic makes the TX650

Seasonic and CWT are mixed between Corsair's lineup.
