external vs internal hard drive for build

when building a do-it-yourself PC, can an external hard drive be used in place of an internal one? The external ones look so cool and are easy to set up.

I don't think you will get the performance you need to run a system out of an external drive unless you are using SAS. Externals are used for backup and data storage.

You could do it with eSATA. Anything else other than that and SAS would be too slow. I also do not recommend prebuilt externals unless you are diligent with keeping backups.
