First time builder
I’ve finally decided to build my own gaming tower not that I’ve managed to scrape together a little cash. I’ve read some guides online and I think I’ve got a grasp on this, my list right now:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 Processor http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...=CP1-DUO-Q8200 Gigabyte EP45-UD3L Motherboard http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...&sku=G452-0004 Patriot Dual Channel 2048MB (4 of them) http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...1&sku=P33-5010 Western Digital Caviar Green WD10EADS Hard Drive - 1TB http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...u=TSD-1000EADS BFG GeForce 9600 GT OC Video Card - 512MB http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...1&sku=B52-9607 NZXT ALP-001 Alpha ATX Mid-Tower Case http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...&sku=A406-1084 BFG GS-550 ATX Power Supply - 550W http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...4&sku=B52-3012 HP HPDVD1060i DVD Writer http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...655&CatId=1624 Does all of this seem like it’ll work together and run games pretty well? I’m a college student so I can’t go too much higher in price but if there are any obvious needs or easy upgrades I’d love to hear them! |

You will only be eligible for 1 rebate on that RAM.
"Notice: Limit one (1) rebate per person, address, company, or household." |

I missed that, i'll have to look around and see if there are better choices for ram then. I'm mainly just worried that i'll get all of it put together and it won't work.

What is your budget?
I would get a faster dual core instead of a quad. Get a 2x2gb ddr2-800 ram kit instead. Get a WD caviar black stat drive. Look at asus, lg, or lite-on dvd drives. Not sure about how good that psu is. Don't think it's bad, but I'll let others voice their opinion on that. And another vote for newegg. Their customer service is enough to keep me coming back.

BFG power supplies are made by Seasonic, so they are good.
As tomtoon suggested, I highly recommend you go with newegg.com not only you will save money, they have exceptionaly good customer support, Tigerdirect are the opposite. Before I start recomending anything, what is your total budget?

Thanks for all the help so far!
My budget is variable right now, but i should be able to swing anything under $1000. I'll take a look at newegg.com (i wasn't really attached to tiger, i was using it mostly to find the specs) |

For under $1000 you can build a very nice computer that will game fast and do anything else outside of professional video and audio work. Here are some recommendations.
AMD Phenom II X4 940 Deneb 3.0GHz ASUS M4A78 Plus AM3/AM2+/AM2 AMD 770 ATX G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 SeaSonic S12 Energy Plus SS-550HT A computer case you like. SAPPHIRE 100258-1GL Radeon HD 4850 1GB 256-bit GDDR3 I recommend Sony or LG for an Optical Drive (DVD Burner) Western Digital Hard Drive of your choice, preferably a black series not a green. |

Thanks so much for the help. I'm going to change some stuff now that it's been pointed out but i've got a few questions.
I don't have any copies of an OS so i'm going to have to get one, should i use xp, vista, or what? Does it really matter? With the memory kit suggested, should i get one or two sets? |

1)It's up to you, what do you prefer??
Dont forget there is also Windows 7, which you could download a copy of and put it on your new pc. I would recommend it as it's very stable and everything works from windows xp except my webcam(due to it being 4-years old)... 2) About the RAM, 4GB(1 set) will be enough for your needs.. |

Another thing that just came up, i was looking at costomer reviews and there were some remarks that fed ex should be used for the more delicate peices since the free ups sometimes damages things.
Which parts are fragile enough that this should be considered? I'm assuming the motherboard, hard drive, and video card... |

I always use free shipping, or their standard shipping from newegg.
If something gets there and is damaged, newegg customer service is great and will help you get a replacement. As for an os, that's a personal choice. Both xp and vista are stable, and windows 7 will be coming out.... xp uses less resources, and vista has more eye candy and supports dx10. |

Do not download and install Windows 7 unless you are prepared to WIPE the hard drive to reinstall something when the RC expires. It is not finished software, Microsoft is providing it for TESTING PURPOSES ONLY.

Why would I wipe the hard drive??
When I installed the RC, everything was still there as it made a windows.old folder.. |

The RC will EXPIRE and quit working in 2010, and there is no GUARANTEE that you will be able to UPGRADE to the official released version.

The RC will actually shut down every 2 hours starting in March 2010. That alone is a reason to not use it as your main os.

I've read that if you upgrade before it expires, then you will be able to upgrade...
