Power Supply Question
I just recently bought these components for my new computer:
* SIGMA PHANTOM PHANTOM-WB Black 1.0mm SECC Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case * ASUS M4A79 Deluxe AM2+/AM2 AMD 790FX ATX AMD Motherboard * XFX PVT95GZAFG GeForce 9500 GT 1GB 128-bit GDDR2 PCI Express 2.0 x16 Video Card * AMD Phenom II X4 940 Deneb 3.0GHz Socket AM2+ 125W Quad-Core Black Edition Processor Model HDZ940XCGIBOX * [G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-6400CL5D-4GBPQ] x 2 * Western Digital Caviar Green WD10EADS 1TB SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive All of this and a 600W power supply. I went onto a website and used a power supply calculator, one said to get one with 500W and one said 600W. I bought the 600W one. Will 600W be enough for this? Thanks. |

I am by no means a long-time contributor to this board or a professional system builder, but with that said, 600W looks like it should serve you pretty well. The brand of the supply itself would be a better indicator of quality and the stability of your system.

It should be enough, that being said, not all power supplies are equal.
Post brand & model, so one of the real experts can give their blessing { shucks, I was beaten to the punch } |

OCZ are in the 'good list'
http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=131195 That power supply should be plenty for what you want. You haven't listed an optical drive? any reason why?

Thanks a ton. I was starting to over question what I had bought. So this is reliving some stress. Thanks again.

Do yourself a favour and do an "out of case build" before installing everything into the case:
http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=168456 I have been building machines for years and like a lot of the other old hats around here I still do out of case builds from time to time, it can save an awful lot of hair pulling when it doesn't boot for the first time. By the way. Welcome to PCMech. |

Your good to go with that power supply. In my opinion you have room to spare as well so should you wish to add another harddrive as a storage slave in the future you won't have any problems.

When are you going to build this bad boy? What operating system are you going to use?
Have you looked at Windows 7 yet? we have a few threads about W7 here: http://forum.pcmech.com/forumdisplay.php?f=50 |

I plan on using Windows XP Professional 64-Bit. I ordered the parts yesterday from newegg.com. I haven't really considered windows 7 yet because of the lack of tech support if anything goes wrong. I run XP everyday and I am really comfortable with that. Is there any advantages to windows 7 over Windows XP Professional 64-Bit? Once I get the parts I plan to start building. Mid next week hopefully.

At the moment there are not going to be any advantages because obviously W7 is still going to have some bugs to iron out. I was never a fan of Vista, what I knew of it was only from customers machines. I did try the beta version of Vista for a while but it was so temperamental I binned it in a heart beat. I have been using W7 for about three months now on a spare machine and as I have said in other threads for the first time I am going to buy this new version of Windows as soon as it is released I like it so much. I find it very stable, quite a bit faster than XP and a vast improvement over Vista.
If you don't have any plans to use your new machine as your main machine yet you might want to give W7 a try, you might be pleasantly surprised. |

I have a spare machine that I will be phasing out once I use this computer. I might give Windows 7 a test run on that.

The latest Release Candidate (trial version) is valid until June next year. I have seen a few people having problems with Nero for burning the .iso. I used MagicISO and had no problems at all.
There's plenty of information and download links in the W7 threads, if you need any more information or help just shout. |

If you try to use XP 64, expect driver issues.
