Cheap Update
I am just looking to update my computer, which is about 4 years old now. I have an Antec p180, DVD burner, and some sata hdds that I plan on reusing. I'm looking to spend about $300. While I will be gaming on it, I'm obviously not expecting 50+ fps on all the latest and greatest games.

RAM is cheap now. I would go with 2 X 2GB of the PC6400.
I don't about the quality of the BFG PSU. I'm sure someone will know. |

Yeah, that's what some other people said too. I switched to this. It doesn't meet the GPU's wattage requirement, but it has much more than enough amps on the 12v. Good?
Secondly, how much performance does dual channel offer? Is it worth it to get 2 x 1gb of RAM now for the performance boost, or is it fine to get 1 x 2gb so I have an empty slot for upgrading later? Last edited by Binh; 05-19-2009 at 08:52 PM. |

You'll get the dual channel bump with 2x1GB or 2x2GB. The 4GB kits run under $50, so it wouldn't be a terribly expensive update. Consider too that with just two DIMM slots, you'd have to rip out the old sticks completely if you ever wanted more RAM.
I'd go up one notch to the Corsair 450w just to be safe on the PSU side.

Beat me to it Alaron.
The one place I would recommend overkilling on if at all possible is the power supply. You really, really don't want that to fail. Corsair is a great manufacturer and the 450VX should serve you well. |
