Build Help!
Hi everyone, I'm building my own computer which is going to be used for primarily gaming. My budget is $700. Here's what I have so far.
CASE: Raidmax Smilodon Extreme Black PSU: Corsair CMPSU-650TX MoBo: ASUS P5QL Pro CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 HDD: Western Digital Caviar Black 500GB RAM: Corsair 4GB TWIN2X4096-6400C5 DVD Drive: LG GH22NS30 DVD Burner SOUND CARD: SIIG IC-710012-S2 7.1 VIDEO CARD: NVIDIA GeForce 9800GTX So far all of these parts come out to be $693.91, with shipping. I think I got everything that's necessary for just the computer itself, but please let me know if I missed anything. Can anyone suggest parts that will give me more bang for my buck? I would greatly appreciate any input. Thanks for your time. |

Don't see an OS listed.
Could drop the sound card and try on-board sound first. Everything else will make a decent system.

Oops, forgot about that. Thanks for the feedback and for pointing that out.
I'm thinking I will go with Vista as an OS. Can you guys tell me the difference between 32 and 64 bit? I think I read somewhere that 32 bit is best for the casual gamer, but I could be wrong. As for the soundcard, isn't on board sound typically... crappy? I've haven't heard any audio from a computer using on board audio before, so I don't know myself. |

Onboard audio is supposed to have been improved recently, and many suggest trying that out first to see if you like it. You can always add a sound card later on if you don't.
As for vista 32 or 64, that's a personal choice. I went with vista home premium 64. I believe the 64bit version uses a bit more resources, so you might get a few fps less with that (1 maybe 2), but it wouldn't/shouldn't be noticeable. I have no complaints. |

Hm, I read on the Microsoft forums that 64 bit will utilize RAM beyond 4GB, and 32 bit will only utilize up to 4GB. I don't really plan on using more than 4GB for this build.
I also read that that many 32 bit programs don't work with the 64, so do you think this will be a problem? |

32-bit programs work just fine with 64-bit operating systems. There are very few exceptions.
However, 32-bit DRIVERS don't work on 64-bit operating systems. You have to make sure you are downloading the correct drivers for all of your hardware, as they are addressed differently in 64-bit OSes. |

The main difference, in my eyes, between 32bit and 64bit OS's is that 32 doesn't utilize all 4 gigs of RAM. Go 64.

Drop the sound card and upgrade the mobo to a P5Q Pro.
