Re using Hard Drive on a new build ?
I want to re use my WD 160Gb EIDE hard drive on my new build. I have windows XP Home 32-Bit on it and only have a recovery disc for the program so I purchased Vista Home Premium 64-Bit for System Builders - OEM to use. I have never built a computer from scratch and am not sure if I reuse the hard drive as is, if it will boot up and then install the Vista. Should I install the Vista before hand? I dont care about the data that is on the hard drive so should I wipe the drive clean? Thanks for your help!
The new system will be: Gigabyte GZ-X5BPD-500 ATX mid tower case AMD Phenom II X4 940 Deneb 3.0 GHz Socket AM2+ 125W Quad Core Black Edition Gigabyte GA-MA790X-UDAP Motherboard OCZ Platimun 4GB (2 X @GB) 240-Pinn DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PCs 8500) Memory Sapphire Radeon HD 4850 512MB Video Card Cool master 500W Power Supply LG 22X Ide Lightscribe DVD+/-RW Drive |

It will boot from the CD wipe whatever you had on the old drive and install Vista.

Sorry to be so stupid but do you mean that after I build the computer I would start it with the old windows then open the Drive place the Vista cd in and restart it? Or do you mean that I should wipe the hard drive before I install it in the new case? If so if I run a program to wipe it will the old computer just shut down? Then when I start up the new build install Vista? I know I will need to load the drivers for the video card Etc. Will the new Cpu come with a disc for the BIOs or do you download that from AMD? Thanks for you time

You can open the cd drive without booting all the way into windows. The old windows most likely won't start, because it'll be confused by the new hardware. So just put your current harddrive in the new machine, power it on and insert the cd. Restart the machine, and it'll walk you through installing Vista.
You shouldn't need to do anything with the BIOS; the bios is already installed on the motherboard when you get it.

Thanks!! I take it that Vista will erase what is on the hard drive when it installs so I dont need to worry about erasing the hard drive before hand.
