Das Booted! But HD Hot
Hey there,
I just completed the hardware part of my first build and connected it to power and it booted to BIOS. However, as the BIOS did its preliminary process I felt heat from where the HD was and the area (in the front above the 80mm intake fan) was warm and the HD itself was very warm to the touch. Power was only on for ~10 min before I turned it off in fear of frying something I have never touched a HD in use before so wasnt sure if this is normal. I know in general heat - bad. Parts:
NOTE: As a first time builder, seeing the blue led light up and hearing it pur to life was a GREAT FEELING!! Now I just want to make sure that I can go on with the Soft part of the build without frying the HD THANKS TO ALL THOSE THAT SUGGESTED PARTS AND CONFIGURATIONS

Probably OK.
You've got some heat mixing back into that area that's coming from the 4870 as well. Those are big drives. Mine feel warm after they've been running for abit. Download SPEEDFAN and take a HD temperature reading. My 640s run 32-34C.

Thanks for the info...but it had barely been running for 10 min with the panel open...I got really worried - it would be a while before I get XP installed and get speedfan running

Wouldn't worry about it, if you can touch it then its fine. If you touch it and its that hot it burns your finger then there is something wrong.

Blacks have a 5 year warranty - if you cook it, RMA it. When you get monitoring software installed, if it goes over 50c, something's wrong. I use "HDD Thermometer" to check mine from time to time.

Downloading HDD THermo now - thanks for the tip.
And do you think I can find average running temperature in the manuals of the GPU, CPU, Motherboard, etc? So new to this that I'm learning in volumes but still have sooooo far to go...
