Which of these PC builds are better?

I plan on using this PC to play the upcoming FFXIV next year, which is released sometime next year. The specifications for what is needed has not been released yet, but it is rumored to be high-end.

There is one AMD based and one Intel based.

I like the AMD one for a few reasons, its cheaper for 3.1ghz, which the Intel I chose is 3.0ghz.

And the Motherboard is cheaper, and has 9 USB ports which you can never have enough of.

Both builds are basically the same, except for the motherboard and CPU.

INTEL build:

Case: COOLER MASTER Elite RC-310-BWN1-GP Black Steel

Motherboard: ASUS P5Q SE/R LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz 6MB L2 Cache LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor

CD/DVD Drive: LITE-ON Black (long long long name)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106268

Power Supply: CORSAIR CMPSU-550VX 550W ATX12V V2.2 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139004

Total Price $657.00

-------------------------------------------------------

AMD Build

All the same, except for...

Motherboard: ASUS M4A78 Plus AM3/AM2+/AM2 AMD 770 ATX AMD
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131381

CPU: AMD Phenom II X2 550 Black Edition Callisto 3.1GHz 2 x 512KB
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103680

Which drops the price to $559.00

Thanks.

Neither one is going to work very well (or long) with that power supply.
Find a high amp single rail PSU by PC P&C or CORSAIR and report back.

On the Intel, I'd replace the ram with cheaper DDR2-800. On both, I'd replace that hard drive with a Western Digital Caviar Black.

That AMD 550 is giving astonishing numbers. The 6MB L3 cache is giving this thing an amazing boost. I am not going to do a comparison, I would say go with what you feel you like best.
Both processors are going to seriously own for gaming.

Question about the memory.

What is the difference between DDR2 1066 and DDR2 800?

Technically, the 1066 is faster, but in reality if you go with the Intel E8400 you will have no benefit from the faster Ram unless you plan on over clocking (Highly not recommended, by me anyways!).

Do you see the...

Intel Core 2 Duo E8600 Wolfdale 3.33GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor Model BX80570E8600 - Retail

...going down in price in about a year? I actually don't plan on building for about a year, and may upgrade if the price fits.

Some tips on updated PC Specs

I decided I'm going to save up the extra money to upgrade from my original post. I'm sure the prices will go down in the future, but the price of my current build is about $968.

I made a layout so it's easy for myself to save my build ideas and update in the future.

It is in PDF format, please click the link below.

http://loco.pchardware.angelfire.com/Build_1.pdf

Let me know what you think, thanks.

Good morning.
Forget the E8600.
It is not worth the money.
At all.
Go with an E8400 or E8500.

I'm hoping it goes to a reasonable price in about a year. I just like to plan stuff early

In a year there will be all kinds of new CPUs and hardware.
It's impossible to plan early when it comes to PC building - unless you are planning to do it within a couple of months.

Threads merged, please do not open multiple threads for the same build. Thank you.

If you aren't going to build for a year, planning now is a waste of time. The market will be totally different. In a year, socket 775 will be obsolete. Core i7 has been out for several months, and Core i5 will be out this fall to replace Socket 775 for everything except low end budget systems.

Wow so many new technologies coming out, and to think I was semi-caught up.

Will i5 be better or a step down from i7?

I think i7 will still be around for the real high end stuff.

The i5 is just going to be an i7 with less features and a different socket.
