Windows Home Server Build
Hi All,
I would like to build a Windows Home Server for my home network, and would really appreciate your expertise. I seem to remember a thread some time ago in which Panama Red outlined a very affordable WHS system for someone, but I can't seem to locate it in the archives. I realize that the minimum specs outlined on the Microsoft website are nothing spectacular, but I want the system to be very stable and efficient on power consumption. Here is a preliminary list that I've put together. Antec earthwatts EA380 380W Continuous Power ATX12V v2.0 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817371005 ASUS P5KPL-CM LGA 775 Intel G31 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131288 CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model TWIN2X2048-6400C4 - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145034 Rosewill R5730-P BK 120mm Fan Pre-Installed on the Top and 80mm Slim Fan Cooling HDD,ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811147124 (2) Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drives - OEM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136284 Microsoft Windows Home Server 32 Bit 1 Pack (Power pack 1) - OEM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16832116550 LITE-ON 22X DVD±R DVD Burner Black IDE Model iHAP122-04 - OEM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106281 Total Cost = $405.43 (Plus Shipping) Do you see any compatibility issues, suggestions, or areas that are overkill? Cheers! |

IDE DVD is fine with that motherboard - but a SATA would be a neater installation.
I'd probably put a E5200 processor in it. |

Those Intel E5xxx are really good. Very close to the C2D in performance on most applications.

Thanks guys. I don't know how I left the processor out. I had the E7200 in the back of my mind, but I'll add the E5200 as you recommend.
Intel Pentium E5200 Wolfdale 2.5GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor Model BX80571E5200 - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819116072 My thinking with going with the IDE drive was to save the 2 remaining SATA ports for additional hard drives down the road (just in case). Theoretically, I'll only need the drive once to load the OS. I wish I had an old junker laying around somewhere! |
