Computer randomly turns off
Heyas, having an issue with my comp...
starting about 13 hours ago, when i played videos using Media Player Classic, the video would play fine, but after about 30 seconds~a minute, the whole system just shuts off (looks as if the plug was pulled) I manually rebooted it and tried playing a video again. Same thing, comp turns off after a couple seconds. This happened once more, but this time, when i try to log in, it tells me my local personal settings got corrupted. My User "folder" (All User, Owner, etc) was changed, and i had to resort to making a new admin account, transferring all the files, and then erasing the old account. Fortunately, by moving all the folders over, it restored some of my old settings back. I thought this was MPC's fault, because videos i played on adobe media player or VLC player worked fine Anyways, i went to sleep, but when i woke up, my computer was off. I turned it back on and ran it for several minutes, when all of a sudden, it shut off, like it did while playing a video. This confused me, and i tried turning it back on again, except this time, it would only run for about 5 seconds, before shutting off It's been doing this for the past hour or so...i took it apart, cleaned out the dust...but to no avail. I'm thinking it could be my power supply...but i would need to go out and buy a new one in order to test if thats the case, plus, it hasnt given me any trouble before, except for maybe now Thanks for any help in this isssue

Updating my Computer Parts
Well i've been running the same computer for the past 2 years, and i think its finally starting to die on me
Anyways, below are my current specs CPU - Intel 1.8GHz Core 2 Duo MOBO - nVidia 680i RAM - 6GB DDR2 800 HDD - Standard Western Digital HDDs GPU - Geforce 9800 GTX+ PSU - Zalman 600W modular OS - XP Home SP3 32-bit Case - Antec Gaming 900 right now, i plan to change out my CPU, mobo, and PSU. Also if i can find a 64 bit version of XP, i was wondering if i can upgrade from 32-bit seamlessly So, could anyone give me tips on those 3 parts i want, while still being compatible with the rest of my system? My preference is newegg, and i'd like to keep the cost under 400$ I mean, i could go check newegg, and just slap parts together that have compatible specs, but i thought i'd ask the computer building community first, in case someone knows parts that work well together, what PSU's have the right voltage + correct number of cables, etc Thanks in advance Last edited by EchoDrive; 06-17-2009 at 10:04 PM. Whats wrong with your PSU? Thats a very good power supply.
If you want to stay with Intel CPU, Stick to Intel chipsets and forget Nvidia. The motherboard I have been recommending since I am having great success with is the Asus P5Q Pro. You don't need to go to 64 bit XP unless you plan on having more than 4GB of Ram. CPU really depends on what you want done. Do you Game?

i think my PSU died on me...which is kinda why i'm updating my parts.
I'll probably get another one then I'll look into that P5Q, and asus is a company i like as well Also, i have 6GB of ram right now, so using a 64-bit os would help a lot (looks like XP 64-bit is quite bad...i might just go with vista 64-bit home premium...) and yes, i'm into gaming, so the best cpu you can recommend with my budget would be great =P i wonder if this combo is good: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...t=Combo.197500 Last edited by EchoDrive; 06-17-2009 at 10:35 PM. |

That combo is an excellent choice for gaming. If you need a new PSU, the Corsair 650TX and 750TX are on sale right now.
EDIT: I merged your 2 threads for better continuity. Last edited by glc; 06-17-2009 at 10:39 PM. |

Oh, wonderful, i like Corsair as well, although efficiency wise, i'm not sure how it compares to Zalman. either way, its a 30$ savings, so i'll probably go with that
My current updated spec list would be P5Q Pro Turbo mobo Wolfdale 3.0GHz Dual Core Corsair 650TX and a Vista Home Premium 64-bit OEM Comes out to 530$ (including the shipping, 470 without) Would this be cost effective for the power/efficiency it provides? * Well anyways, i ordered these parts Thanks for the help =P Last edited by EchoDrive; 06-18-2009 at 12:39 AM. |
