New Build and New Builder

I want to build my own computer. I have a hand-me-down Dell Dimension 4300 Desktop that I am looking to replace. I want to replace the monitor, speakers, keyboard and mouse as well. My operating system would be Vista, only because that is the next OS after XP. (Right/Wrong?) As far as a reference for the build, I have what I printed off of the Dell build website...specifically the Studio Desktop which is as follows. (I'm not planning on using this for gaming. I will be using it for surfing the web, photo editing, and for multimedia playback. I would like to hook up some decent speakers so I can stream Podcasts and play other music I upload. Getting High Def DVD/Blueray experience would be nice as well.) Thank you for any suggestions you have. My budget is about 800 dollars.

You didn't list a motherboard. You will definitely need one of those =P.

Also, about getting a blu ray dvd player - In my opinion the blu ray tech is not very developed for the price. They claim to have such a huge space on their discs, which is true, but the drives read the discs so slow that all that extra room is used up and becomes useless. So basically blu ray technology is not worth the price today. A lot of my friends have blu ray's and I've seen how they play. They aren't any different then an HDMI hookup.

Windows Vista - I really don't like vista, it takes up a lot of space on your computer. I would recommend to just go with XP for now until windows 7 comes out.
You probably have the windows XP discs sitting at home somewhere, they usually come with desktops when you buy them.

Also, since you are using this PC for movies etc, I recommend that you get a sound card instead of going with the integrated sound. Sound cards produce a much much higher quality of sound. A good brand is ASUS... Don't buy Creative sound cards!

And security, I use avast! security. It's free if you register with them and provide an email address.

building a desktop for the house

Seanth....Thanks

What I am trying to do is simply save money by building my own. The parts I have listed are for a dell studio....they don't list motherboard. I want to build something like it for less money. Any starting suggestions would be helpful. I am going to check out the spyware/anti virus you have listed and I looked at the OEM software and will consider your recommendation for Windows 7.
Thanks

What is an integrated sound card versus a Stand alone. Why is one better than the other.

It's basically the same principle as gfx cards are better than integrated gfx.

Thanks Tomtoon for some suggestions. I do have some questions about what I've got listed to this point. The OCZ SXS 500W. What is this exactly. I looked on Newegg but it doesn't come up. I am guessing this is the power supply. Also, it was suggested that I get a separate sound card for my specified purposes. Any suggestions for a sound card? The video card Tomtoon suggested was ATI. The brand I found was HIS (although I guess the chipset is ATI). I noticed several different manufactures--Is one better than the other as far as Video cards go?

ASUS P5Q Turbo LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail
Model #:P5Q Turbo $124.99
HIS Hightech H477F512P Radeon HD 4770 512MB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card - Retail
Model #:H477F512P $119.99
Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 2.33GHz LGA 775 95W Quad-Core Processor Model BX80580Q8200 Model #:BX80580Q8200$159.99
CORSAIR 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model TWIN2X4096-6400C5 $46.99
Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD5000AAKS 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - OEM Model #:WD5000AAKS $59.99
ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro 92mm CPU Cooler - Retail
Model #:ACFZ7-PRO $36.98
Thanks for all the recommendations so far.

Also, I noticed small differences in the specs for the various motherboards. It seemed some were more versatile with memory modules?
Any recommendations on a case?

The Q8200 is not a good processor in my opinion. I think the Q9xxx series are better or you might consider the AMD Phenom II. That motherboard is a good one. You do not need a CPU cooler, stock coolers work fine and won't void your warranty. As far as video card brands here is a link http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=207566
What about a power supply? That is the most important component in your computer. Cases are a natter if taste.

Ok, the AMD Phenom II is not going to work with the P5Q that is an Intel motherboard. If you want to go the AMD route you will need an AMD based motherboard like this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131368 rest of your Hardware looks real good.

Thanks for the recommendation.

Any suggestions on speakers and monitor? Thanks again

1. The HD 4770 was a one-off item, a HD 4850 is a better card and the price has recently come down.
2. Replace that SE16 hard drive with a Caviar Black.
3. Try the onboard sound first. If you don't like it, then add a sound card later.
4. Replace that IDE DVD burner with a SATA.

Newegg is out of stock on the liteon's.
The LG's are IDE, and they don't seem to have any ASUS.
I am sure I can get these from another source.

Is there anything wrong with Samsung DVD/CD burners. \\
by the way Tomtoon, I checked out the Pioneer. It looks like you pay Xtra for Qflix. I am old school. Still ordering from netflix and such.

Do you need floppy disk drives anymore (The plastic square card thinga-ma-jigger)? I was reading somewhere that it might be helpful for initial software load? Is this true? If so, is this installed on the motherboard already? I do not see anybody listing these as part of a new build? Perhaps silly question....

You need a floppy drive to install Windows XP if you set the SATA controller to AHCI mode. Most people don't bother, and seem to forget that little issue.

Thanks GLC. This is a little over my head. I'm really not sure what the SATA controller is let alone AHCI mode. I was reading in another post where Khalil recommended the Beta windows 7. Eventually I will need to put some kind of software on the machine...is there a general guideline to consider when installing software. I do want a windows product primarily and Ubuntu secondary.

The guideline is simple you stick the CD in the CD rom and follow the prompts. You can download windows 7 for free and use it till October then you can buy it. Windows 7 is far superior to windows XP.

ahci is the "real" or native mode for sata. it requires drivers. sata also has a ide emulation mode which presents itself as a ide controller and hence doesnt require drivers. when the floppy F6 way gives a hissy fit (like recently which compact desktop) i just slipstream the drivers with nLite
