I just bought a new Dell for my parents, and I now have the old PC I built for them about 5or 6 years ago.
I'd like to use the case and put all new components in it. Let's just say spending about 1000.00. The case is an Enermax that I bought with the power supply aready in it. A 300 watt ATX, with a 8cm fan in the lower front, and a 8cm fan in the middle on the back. My question is, can I build a new PC using this case with more up to date components. I plan on replacing the power supply. How much power should I put in it? I was ballparking about 700 watts. Do I need that much, or settle for about 500 watts. Do power supplys remove and install easily. I've never bought a case without the power supply already integrated in it. Would appreciate your thoughts about getting started with this. I'm just starting to look at parts. Not sure if I will go Intel or AMD. Thanks, |

Yes, you can reuse the case. I have several cases from the 486 days that have new parts in them. Front panel connectors could be an issue. Depending what is put into the case, cooling could become an issue with those 80mm fans.
As for a PSU, the size will depend on what you will have for a video card and CPU. A middle of the road Intel CPU with onboard or basic video card: 350 to 400w. Middle of the road video card:400 to 550w. High end cards: 550 to 700w.

Psu
I think I'll look for a 700 watt psu then. I might as well have more than what I might need. I don't think the prices are all that much more for an extra 200 watts.
Is there anything I can do for more cooling. What other types of fans could I install? |

You have enough cooling unless you are planning on a high end or multiple video cards.
We cannot advise you as to the best power supply until you tell us what other components you will be using. Front panel connectors will not be an issue as long as the case is ATX, which it should be. Admin note: Please use standard fonts. Thank you. |
