First Time Build, Need Advice/Help
After realizing the limitations of upgrading proprietary components, I've decided to go with my own build. (It's surprisingly cheap, too). So, I would just like to make sure I have all the necessary hardware, wires, and software.
I already have a 500GB SATA HD, a GeForce 8800GTS 512 GPU, an ASUS Xonar DX sound card, an external wireless receiver, a keyboard and mouse, and speakers. GPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130325 Sound Card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16829132006 Here's what I'm going to buy: Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811129043 Monitor: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824009145 Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128372 CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115037 PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139009 RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231166 DVD/CD Drive and Burner: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827151173 Operating System: http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Wind...6144842&sr=1-3 Office Suite: http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Offi...6144766&sr=1-1 I'm going for the larger case because I want to have room for future expansion. The same goes for the 850W PSU; it may be more than what I need with the components I listed, but I want that extra power for future expansion. I'm thinking about this (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824236049) monitor, but the 8800GTS doesn't have an HDMI connection. Would I be underutilizing the full potential of that monitor if I plugged it into that GPU? Or does the HDMI make very little difference for things like video games? As for the OS, I'm going with XP Pro 32-bit because most of the programs I use are incompatible with Vista. While it does prevent me from fully using all 4 gigs of ram, I just don't want to go with Vista for the reason already stated. What about BIOS? Will I have all the cables I need? Please give me any advice. EDIT: This will be my everyday computer and also my gaming computer. Right now Unreal Tournament 3 is the most advanced game I play, but I'm going to buy Crysis. I have a limited budget (between $1000-$1200) and I don't do intense gaming and I don't overclock. Krattle Last edited by Krattle; 06-27-2009 at 08:03 PM. |

I like ASUS much more than GIGABYTE, but that's just my personal preference. Looking at your budget and parts, I would change a few parts.
RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231122 -This is because you aren't overclocking, so you can save a few dollars on RAM. The performance will be the same. Motherboard/CPU (combo): http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...t=Combo.197500 -This is the P5Q Pro Turbo by ASUS. I have had better luck with them and you won't be spending much more than than you did with the Gigabyte. OS: I personally love Windows 7, so I would pre-order it for 49.99 and just download the release candidate(free) until then. |

Thank you, that was good advice! I'll use that combo and the RAM.
Are there no compatibility problems with my setup? I'm pretty sure there aren't, but I'm not an expert at this. |

The only reason to use HDMI instead of DVI is to also feed audio.
