Wanted to Keep it under $1000

At first I was looking at purchasing a laptop (Sager NP8662 or NP2098) but decided that it may be more fun to build a desktop. Please take a look at my specs and see if it works. I'd like to keep it under $1000. Please note that I still need a monitor. I am open to any suggestions and if I need more components (fans, heatsink, etc.), let me know.

OS Vista Home Premium 64-Bit

Look at Hanns-G for monitor brands. They're pretty solid at a reasonable price.

Unless you already have Vista, I'd try running the Windows7 Release Candidate, and planning on upgrading to the real thing when it comes out.

I'll second ForceFlow's recommendation of Hanns-G monitors. I'm using one now (have been for a couple years) and am very happy with it.

You have chosen good hardware and an excllent CPU, you pretty much have it all covered, you don't need after market heatsink or fans. I agree with Lefty, Windows 7 is better than Vista.
Newegg has great deals on Asus Monitors, Asus and Samsung are the best monitors you can get.

Great choices, especially if that's your first build. Everything looks perfect.

Ok, before I place the order, below are my final specs. I appreciate that you took the time to review my intial setup. I made a few changes and added a monitor. Thanks again for your help. Hopefully in a week or so I will have a fully functioning computer. By the way, order total with shipping comes to $1094.38. I am considering adding an additional hard drive solely for the OS and programs. Is this beneficial or worth the trouble? Or should I just keep the 500Gb HDD for everything? Thanks again.

Also, I've taken your suggestions and will go ahead with Windows 7 64bit RC1. This is my biggest concern. I know I can put all the parts together but I may have difficulties getting the OS, drivers, and software functioning. We'll see. This is my first build so I'm excited but a little nervous. If there's anything else I may need (software, components, etc.), please let me know. Thanks.

This is kinda fun so I looked at a few other CPU/MOBO combos. Let me know what you think. I'll probably keep most of the other components I selected earlier but if you have any suggestions, I'd be glad to hear them.

As an FYI, my first build:

I like the Phenom II X3. How does is compare to the Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 or E8500?

If you live near a Microcenter, you can get the Q9550 for $170 + Tax in store!
http://www.microcenter.com/single_pr...uct_id=0299412

Both the E8x00 series and the Q9550 can overclock well. You should probably read about overclocking and decide whether you plan to try it sometime in the future or not. If no, then the stock cooler that comes with the CPU will be fine. If you yes, you will probably want go ahead and purchase an aftermarket CPU cooler now so that you don't have to tear your PC apart to install one later on. You can do moderate overclocking with the stock cooler, but (especially with quads) your overclock will be limited by the cooler. The Asus P5Q Pro that you picked will overclock well. I don't know how well the 790GX motherboard overclocks.
Some good ones include:

- Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme ("TRUE") (pricy, & you need to buy a separate fan, but arguably the best air cooler on the market)
http://www.directron.com/u120e.html

- Tuniq Tower (almost as good as the TRUE, less expensive, & fan included)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835154001

- Sunbeam Core-Contact Freezer (cheap ($25 after MIR), new Heatpipe Direct Touch, & fan included)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835207004

In the hard drive department, for $5 more than your current pick (250gb per platter), you can get the 640GB WD Black hard drive, which has a higher platter data density (320gb per platter). This should translate into faster reads/writes.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136319

Or if you don't mind switching to Seagate, you could save $10 and get the 7200.12 500GB drive, which has an even higher density (500gb per platter) than the 640GB WD drive.

Enjoy your new build!
