Budget build (gaming and school)

I have been researching all of the parts for a few months and I would like to see what all of you think about this build. I recently bought a new keyboard and speakers so those are out of the way.

Case - Cooler Master Elite 335 (may change)
- add in front 120mm blue LED fan

Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-MA770-UD3

Graphics card - XFX Radeon HD 4870 1GB

Power supply - TOPOWER ZU-550W 550W

Processor - AMD Phenom II X2 550 BE Callisto

Memory - OCZ Gold 4GB DDR2 800

Hard drive - Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB 7200RPM 16MB cache

Monitor - Acer 19" high-res

Mouse - Microsoft Wired Laser Mouse 6000

DVD burner - Sony Optiarc DVD/CD

OS - Windows Vista 64-bit with free Windows 7 upgrade

The one thing I am unsure about is whether or not the motherboard will recognize the CPU, which is AM3, without updating the BIOS. The Gigabyte website says that the UD3 supports AM3, but I do not know if the support comes with a new update or not.

Topower Zumax are absolute garbage, look at Corsair, Sea Sonic, Antec or fsp. XFX is about the worst video card maker on the market. Look at Asus or Diamond if you want a solid warranty with excellent support. Gigabyte makes nice boards but if they fail for some reason you will have to deal with a nightmare to get support. Go with an Asus motherboard and save yourself a major headache.

and welcome to pcmech.com forums

Thank you!
I found this ASUS motherboard - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131381 and also an ASUS graphics card - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814121291.

What PSU would you recommend? One in the 550W range, and not too expensive?

Yes a 550W Corsair or Sea Sonic would be awesome. The Asus board and video card you chose are great! Those Black Knight video cards I am currently running 8 of them for folding in the Nvidia format, the heatsink design on them is excellent. You do want to stick to ATI for gaming, Nvidia is better for folding.
