Upgrading PC

Hey all,

My bro is an avid gamer but not such an avid PC builder, so he asked me to upgrade his existing build. Budget is 600-1000 but he'd rather keep it on the lower end. Please give me feedback on this new build.

Hard Drive WD750

CPU E8500

Video Card ATI 4890

PSU OCZ StealthXStream 700

MoBo Asus P5Q Pro Turbo

He currently has an old AMD 5200. However, his computer has since "died" and he can't diagnose it. From the sounds of it, it's either his MoBo, Vid Card, or Power Supply. He has just decided to upgrade instead of spending money to get it fixed.

The parts you listed in your first post will make a really good gaming machine however I am not too keen at this point with OCZ. I recommend if you can go with either Sea Sonic or Corsair for a power supply.

CORSAIR CMPSU-550VX 550W ATX12V V2.2

Will that play well with the 4890 or should I got a step up?

Thanks.

Unless something is truly pathetic, like using 512k of RAM to run Vista, then upgrading a PC is like adding a crutch. It kinda-sorta might get you by for a while. Ultimately though, a replacement is usually just over the horizon. My point is that it may be money better spent by getting a replacement as opposed to throwing good money after bad. If you do decide to spend money on an old computer then try to get parts which will also work with your new computer...like a high end graphics card. This can be tough though when CPU sockets, RAM and power requirements for graphics cards seem to be changing once every few years.

"Upgrading" was probably the wrong term. I meant he was "upgrading to a new computer." He's only keeping the case.

I would also look at the HD4870x2 gfx card, if your budget allows. I have seen really good reviews of this card and if I would have known at the time when I bought my HD4890, I would have got that one instead. Not to say the 4890 is bad, it's an awesome card, but the internally cross-fired HD4870x2 seem to have the upper hand. The downside to all this awesomeness is that it will run you about $150 more than the HD4890 putting it at about $350.

BTW...I'm using a Corsair 650w with my system and it's ran great so far. If he plans to X-fire, then I believe he will need a larger PSU, like around 750w...maybe someone can confirm this if indeed this the route to be taken.
