upgrading a hp workstation xw4200
my current specs:
ATI fireGL v3100 GPu pentium 4 3.2 ghz processor 768mb ram 80 gig WD hard drive standard hp cd drives sound blaster live sound card linksys wireless network card and ethernet card 410W continuous output PS what i want to upgrade to: HIS hd radeon 4890 750 gb WD caviar black hard drive and 4 gigs of corsair ddr2 memory will it work? and will a better graphics card and memory improve my framerate in games? if the power supply isnt enough can it at least handle the graphics card? EDIT: the card comes with an adapter for 2 4 pin molex's into a 6 pin. so all the plugs are ready and the slot is PCI E x16. will the powersupply handle all it? and will it work with an hp mobo? thanks in advance Last edited by indaface95; 07-30-2009 at 10:45 PM. |

Generic memory is not supported. It requires ECC.
http://www.crucial.com/store/listpar...x?model=xw4200 The power supply is very questionable. |

ehh im starting to see that theres very limited ways of upgrading big name computers.... oh well im gonna get to work on building my own and use this pc for parts. thanks glc\
EDIT: will the parts from this HP workstation work with a custom build at least? is a pentium 4 a socket 775? and can the memory work on an asus p5q pro? Last edited by indaface95; 07-31-2009 at 05:37 PM. |

I think your out of luck reusing the CPU and ram in a P5Q board. Looks like neither parts are supported.

Nothing good is cheap. Save some money and build yourself a good rig.

Considering that all new motherboards come with onboard sound and Ethernet - the only thing you will NEED is the wireless card if you must run it wireless. DVD burners are so cheap you won't need the old CD drive. The old hard drive could be put in a USB adapter and used for doing backups.
The video card will only work if it's PCI-Express. Also, it's not a gaming card. You might as well keep the workstation intact and use it for something else. |
