custom-built PC problems

I recently built my own budget gaming-PC with parts I ordered from newegg.

here are the parts:

case: cooler master centurion
mobo: ASUS M4A78-EM AMD 780G/SB700
CPU: AMD Phenom X4 quad-core 9600 2.3GHz
Graphics card: MSI Geforce N9800GT
PSU: ROSEWILL 550W
HDD: Barracuda 500GB
Memory: 4GB DDR2 800

When I turn it on, the green light on the motherboard lights up, all five internal fans turn on, I can hear the hard drive humming, but the monitor remains blank. I have tried using all the available video ports and several different monitors, and I can never get anything to show up on the screen. I'm afraid it might be a CPU problem. is there any way to tell if I have a bad CPU? any suggestions for troubleshooting?

I plugged in speakers and I didn't hear any error beeps :-\
and I tried the out-of-chassis boot-up and it still had the same results. :-(

thanks for the suggestions. keep 'em coming, if you can.

If I were to guess it is probably that PSU, they are about the worst you can buy. Do you have access to another PSU?

You don't plug in speakers to the sound jack, you connect a CASE speaker to the header for the front panel.

even with the case speakers connected, I am not getting any beeps for some reason.
also, I suspected a faulty psu from the very beginning, but I RMA'd it for a new one with the same results.

Do you have ALL the PSU connectors plugged in? There's a 2x2 connector on the edge of the board between the CPU socket and the rear panel connectors..........

Have you tried it with the onboard video?

yes, I connected both the 20-pin and the 4-pin connectors from the PSU into the corresponding motherboard sockets. and yes, I tried using the onboard video card, both VGA and DVI.
