Thanks

Welcome to PCMech.

Is the $1500 for everything (including monitor, and keyboard) or just for the computer and operating system?

Thank you, it's only for the system/keyboard/OS - monitor not included in the $1500

For a gaming system, I'd be more inclined to stay with socket 775 - with a fast dual core such as a E8500 on one of the Asus P5Q boards and 4gb of DDR2 ram. Throw the money saved into a stronger video card. If you want i7, wait till fall when the new socket and P55 chipset is out.

Umm, with a 1500 dollar budget for a gaming pc you could (and imo should) try to cut off some of that price and go with the 4870x2 gpu its the best you can get from ati atm.

Masaki 7-11 you are the man - looking at the list I think I can drop the little things like keyboard and get them locally. Really appreciate the help

glc good call on waiting till fall the i7, but I have a feeling I might have to wait a few more for the price to drop a little, if any.

AMGrbaowska For the GPU Im going to look at nvidea. I've had such bad experience with ATi. My main concern is a GPU that can allow me to play games and do 3D modeling without worries of it losing it's grip.

Yeah, you can definitely game with a Microsoft keyboard-mouse combo, the expensive stuff can be nice, but you only really need it if you play competitively. Also as far as an Nvidia GPU, I also prefer Nvidia, but overall I think you get more for less with ATI atm.

If you go with Nvidia go with GTX275 or better if you want to game good.

You guys have any input on THIS CARD I'm particularly interested in the fact that it is quiet and doesn't heat up. Any recommendations similar to this one but maybe better?

Admin edit: I can't fix the link, but this is what it is:

SAPPHIRE Vapor-X 100269VXLE Radeon HD 4890 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card - Retail

You never said the resolution of the monitor you plan on using. The greater the number of pixels, the more powerful a card (or cards) you will want.

High end graphics cards are not quiet...period. Unless they are water cooled or you choose to run the GPU fan way below 100%.

If you right click and copy the link, it gives you:
http:// SAPPHIRE Vapor-X 100269VXLE Radeon HD 4890 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card - Retail

Which by Newegg.ca would be this.

To David M., I've heard that Vapor-X is some sort of weird water cooling, which is why it's quiet.

What happend to wanting Nvidia?
Quote:

I like the 4890 it is a much better card than Nvidia dollar for dollar.
Warning though, Sapphire has no direct RMA with consumers, if it fails most places like Newegg.com will not take it back after 30 days and you would be on your own.
I highly recommend you go with either Diamond or Asus if you go ATI for the best direct support.

This list is a pretty good start but I have to disagree with a few points. Intel Core i7 920 can be purchased from Microcenter for $199.99 right now. If you don't have a microcenter nearby, there is always eBayers who buy from that Microcenter deal and resell for a marginal profit.

Also, I would hold off on Windows Vista and get Windows 7. You will be much better off waiting for Windows 7 than buying vista now and having to fork over the extra $100 to upgrade to windows 7 when it is released. I have heard of Vista -> Windows 7 upgrade packs though and you might want to look into that.

Lastly, I would go with an Antec brand case over the NZXT. Antec cases get much better reviews and, in my experience, are better in hand. Antec 1200 is the high end, or 900 is the low end. Either should suit your needs.

In my original recommendation, the Core i7 and motherboard combo had savings of $50, effectively lowering the price of the Core i7 to $230. While this is more than microcenter, it is easier to buy everything from one place as it will save you time and will only need to use one place for warranty.

The Windows Vista I recommended in both my build lists comes with a "tech guarantee" which is basically a Windows 7 Upgrade Coupon.

NZXT is a pretty solid brand, and the NZXT Tempest is basically a redesigned Antec 900 with more airflow, and supports extended ATX motherboards, however the price is still about the same, so the value is better with the NZXT case.

NZXT cases are quite nice, but stay AWAY from their power supplies.
