Building first PC, 1200 dollar budget
Hey guys, total computer noob here. Seeing as how my current computer is going on 7 years old and slowly dying, I've decided that I need a new one. I was talking to my buddy who has built 4 computers of his own, and he said that buying computer parts online is the best way to go. He says he'll come over and help me build the computer once I buy all the parts. A quick google search led me to this website. Anyway, here is what I'm looking for:
*Budget: $1200 dollars minus monitor *Building for: gaming *Intel processor *I'd like a good keyboard but nothing top of the line *Operating system: I've heard terrible things about Vista, and I currently use XP. I've also heard about Windows 7 (although I'm not really sure what that is?) - I'll go with whatever you guys recommend *Hard drive capacity: At least 500 megs Thanks |

Couple of comments here.
Sapphire is a bad choice even though they make great cards, if it fails after 30 days you are on your own, they have no direct consumer support and newegg will not help you after the first 30 days are up. Please read their policy. That motherboard is very problamatic if you are going with i7 go with P6T Deluxe V2, that is the only stable board I can recommend with the X58 chipset. For Gaming WD Black is superior than Blue. Everything else AMG listed looks good.

Yeah, sorry Khalil, Im still learning and this seem like a good thread to build for, its fun anyways.
And as far as the Video card, then this should work... HIS H489F1GP Radeon HD 4890 1GB 256-bit PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card (Yes, I read your thread on suggested Video Cards Khalil, I just thought that the Saphire was nice because of the built in HDMI.) *You could also add this Hard Drive without going over you budget... +$13 Western Digital Caviar Black WD5001AALS 500GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Last edited by AMGrbaowska; 08-05-2009 at 12:45 AM. |

HIS is good. They have the best cooling solutions of all the Radeon manufacturers.
I would personally wait till fall if at ALL possible, for the new Intel socket and the P55 chipset. The X58 chipset is too damn expensive and unstable, and can be a real bear for an inexperienced builder. The other options are a high end socket 775 build or an AMD build. If you go 775, look at the Asus P5Q series boards and get a fast DUAL core such as a E8500. It's going to be a while yet before games can take advantage of quad cores. If you do go with the i7 build, I'd recommend a TRIPLE channel ram kit, not a dual channel. |

Thanks AMG. I notice that some people are complaining about the GeForce overheating. Will that be a problem if I decide to go with that card?

For comparison, I have put together a AMD build list below including a keyboard for under $1200. The Phenom II processors from AMD are comparable to the Intel Core 2 Quad series in performance and quality, the chipsets for AMD are quite stable and the AM3 socket still has upcoming processors and is more futureproof than the Intel socket 775. I would also think about going with a 32-bit operating system over a 64-bit operating system, as the 32-bit operating system has better compatibility and stability than 64-bit. 64-bit operating systems' main advantage over 32-bit is being able to fully use 4GB of ram and up, which at this point isn't that helpful for the type of computer you are looking to get.

Yes, that is everything, and even though you said a friend is going to help you, this is a good guide on building. How to Build a PC Every Step Explained This will also cover all the parts in a build so next time you know what you need.

On that last Intel list - get a P45 board, not a P43, and you do not need DDR2-1066 ram, all you need is DDR2-800.

I've ordered everything but the LITE-ON DVD Writer Black SATA iHAS424-08 because it's out of stock. How long do I have to wait until it becomes available and also is there any other place that I could buy it from for the same price?

Thanks for the link but I don't like what I'm reading on the review section.
Cons: This burner has some type of virtual software built into the drive called "Bluebirds". Bluebirds is advertisement linked to the LG website to get you to buy more LG products. If you choose not to install the software you will be prompted to install it every time you close the drive door. If you install it you get the tray icons pointing to more LG products. If you remove it from the startup it adds itself back to the startup every time you close the drive door. I think I'll pass hehe. |
