new build parts compatibility

Hey,
First time poster. I need a sanity check on the parts I got to build. The smoke test didn't go well so I am double checking. I didn't see the BIOS or hear a beep. Here is the list minus peripherals. The last test was per some of what Panama Red posted - fans, one stick of RAM, and the front panel connectors. (No front USB, front audio, HD, DVD)

Power Up Black Mid T ATX Case w/450w PSU

Kingston 2048MB PC5400 DDR2 667MHz CL5

Intel Core 2 Duo E8200 2.66Ghz 6MB 1333FSB CPU

ASUS P5KPL-AM SE Intel G31 Socket 775 Motherboard

PROBLEMS with a NEW BUILD? Try This!!

If that doesn't work, you may want to try a different power supply.

The fans run and the LEDs are on. I would think 450w is plenty but maybe ... This part set was recommended on TigerDirect as a bare-bone kit so I was thinking that would not be an issue. It is something to try.

Also I checked Crucial.com and it recommends the PC6400 memory and I have the PC5400. (That was part of the bare-bone kit as well). I think the 5400 would be fine but slightly slower. Any ideas on that?

Sorry to say, you made a big mistake. Tiger Direct's barebones kits are mostly low quality and/or distressed merchandise.

PowerUp power supplies are total garbage, the 667 ram was sold as a "clearance", the E8200 is long discontinued, and even though it's Asus, that's a entry level motherboard.

Yikes! I didn't see thqat coming. So the question is now what to do? If I send it back I will prbably take at least a restocking fee hit and maybe they will reject the return. The MOBO is entry level and that's fine since this is just a home PC (no gaming, etc...) I would assume that it is going to last. Do you agree or is Tiger that low down? I would sya the HD, DVD will be OK btu again the same question. I can try another PS. When you say the CPU is obsolete dows that mean defective? Is that what I am hearing that Tiger customers see a high percentage of defective parts ?

The best option is to send it all back. Chalk up the restocking fee as a lesson learned.

The Asus motherboard is probably ok, we recommend Asus boards often. You would be better off with DDR2-800 RAM from Corsair or Crucial, Kingston is not the best quality anymore. The CPU is not defective necessarily, but a model that is not sold anymore, thats why Tiger is clearing it out in those bundles.

The biggest problem with the bundle is the power supply. You never want to cheap out on them and PowerUp units are poor, as glc mentioned. That is the likely cause of your boot troubles.

We recommend shopping at Newegg.com instead.

Kingston quality is fine these days, but 667 speed is not the right stuff for that build.

Bottom line - everything in that package you bought is discontinued closeout stuff or low quality. That version of the Asus G31 board is going away, only the P5KPL-CM is being kept (the C stands for corporate stable and will be around long term). There is no demand for 667 speed ram any more.

I had already sent the mobo and cpu back. I am waiting to see what their response will be to figure out how to go forward. I appreciate all the input

Hey glc, is the 667 ram not compatible then? If so I will definitily go after Tiger on that.

I did cruise the forum some before I bought albeit not in depth. One thing I didn't stumble on was some guidance on all the different on-line retailers. It probably is there but if not that would be really helpful for people trying this the first time. I saw Newegg and PirateDirect as about equal and took the wrong fork in the road I guess. Ugh!

It's compatible, but will degrade performance.
