2nd build

Hi all,
With the help of many members, i have my 1st build done in Nov 08 and was thinking about upgrading and building another PC for a friend using some of my replaced parts.
Any advise is greatly appreciated.

Here is my current spec...
Asus P5Q Pro Mobo http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131299
Intel Core2 Duo E8400 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115037
G.Skill 4GB Ram http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231166
Asus EN9600GT http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814121242
OCZ 600W PSU http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817341001
Seagate 500GB HD http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148288
DVD burner http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106264
Samsung 30" Monitor http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824001098
Antec 900 case http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811129021
Windows Vista Ultimate 32bits

My plan...
Replace Antec 900 with 300 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811129042)
Upgrade to a Core2 Quad processor
Upgrade Video card
HD maybe

My friend's build...
Asus P5Q Pro Mobo http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131299
Chipset E8400 (from me) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115037
My Video card http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814121242
G.Skill 2GB Ram http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231144 (I got them for my 1st build before i upgrade to 4GB)
Antec 900 (from me)
HD either from me or i will probably get another Seagate

My main reason for considering an upgrade now is coz my friend is in need of a new PC, otherwise i would have waited for an i7.

Any advise?
Thanks in advance.

It's a fine idea, one of the main positives about building your own PC is that the pieces can be recycled and used again in new builds. Keep in mind, though, that you aren't going to see much of a performance increase from an E8400 to a Quad.

I'm surprised.

How about just upgrading Video Card and HDD?

Do you do anything more than gaming and regular PC use? If you are a gamer I would stick to the E8400 and upgrade the video card.
If you run intense multi applications then a Quad like the Q9550 will show substantial gain in performance over the E8400. The Q8xxx are weak and won't by any means be a good upgrade from the E8400

No gaming at all.
My work requires me to constantly use PostgreSQL(http://www.postgresql.org/about/), would this be considered "intense multi application"?

No gaming at all - the Q9550 would be an upgrade. Any lesser quad isn't worth it.

Thanks glc.
Would i be able to see a substantial gain in performance?

Off topic...just wondering how much memory do you get out of a 150 WD Raptor 10k HDD.

Sorry, figured by your wanting to upgrade the Video Card that you were a gamer. Going from an E8400 to a Q9550 is a noticeable upgrade, but I guess the substantial part depends on your definition of the word. I guess I would consider it just below substantial.

Not understanding the Raptor question.

Hard drives do not have "memory".

However, a 150gb drive will show up in My Computer as having about 140gb of space.

I don't know how "substantial" a performance increase you will see - but the more stuff you have open, the more responsive the system will seem.

LOL.
Thats what i meant.

Sorry if this sounds "stupid" again, but why is it more responsive with more stuff opened?

More stuff open = better use of additional cores.

Instead of upgrading to a Quad, would it be better just try overclocking my E8400?

Thanks.

Thanks jdeb.
Very technical stuff...
From my initial reading, OC'ing is not as easy as i thought.
Sounds a bit scary lol.
