New build advice
I am looking to build a computer for my cousin. He is not a gamer. He would like to use it to record video from a security video camera mounted on the exterior of his house. He would also like to use it as a media computer to record tv and play it back on a tv as a DVR.

You need to find out what types of inputs the TV has: VGA/DVI/HDMI/S-Video/etc. If it has HDMI inputs, then you need a video card with HDMI outputs. They start at around $35-40. That is what I used on a repurposed Dell workstation for a conferance room media PC going to a 42" LCD TV.
Tuner cards-will let others pipe in on them.

Video card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102838
It has it all - VGA, DVI, HDMI - and a good 430w PSU is plenty for it. If you want to save some substantial bucks, you can use an Asus P5KPL-CM motherboard. |

Thanks for you help.
I was wondering if a motherboard with onboard graphics and with HDMI, DVI, etc outputs would work or is it better to have a video card because of video recording and playback? |

On-board video uses system memory and possibly other system resources while with a video card, all the work is done on the card.

Well, considering you can get a board with advanced video for the same price or less than one with no video, try it. You can always add a card later.
