Quick Question on minor PC repair

Hi all,

I'm doing some minor rebuild work for a friend's parents (PSU died, nothing big), and when I was inside the machine I noticed that the CPU fan was on its last legs (sounded horrible, 2 blades missing, not even screwed in!). The CPU it's supposed to be keeping cool is an Intel Celeron 2.60 Processor. Also, there's not even a fan venting the air out! There's a hole for one, so I was going to just install a 80mm to get some air flow going. The CPU is about 3 inches from the fan; do you think I can get away with no fan attached directly to the CPU? Celeron's aren't exactly known for their horse power.

On a side note, there wasn't even any thermal compound when I took the heat sink off! Stinking eMachines.

No, you need to replace the CPU fan. The exhaust fan will not offer sufficient cooling for the CPU.
If there was no thermal compound on the CPU/heatsink, someone has removed it.
