Quick Question on minor PC repair
Hi all,
I'm doing some minor rebuild work for a friend's parents (PSU died, nothing big), and when I was inside the machine I noticed that the CPU fan was on its last legs (sounded horrible, 2 blades missing, not even screwed in!). The CPU it's supposed to be keeping cool is an Intel Celeron 2.60 Processor. Also, there's not even a fan venting the air out! There's a hole for one, so I was going to just install a 80mm to get some air flow going. The CPU is about 3 inches from the fan; do you think I can get away with no fan attached directly to the CPU? Celeron's aren't exactly known for their horse power. On a side note, there wasn't even any thermal compound when I took the heat sink off! Stinking eMachines. |

No, you need to replace the CPU fan. The exhaust fan will not offer sufficient cooling for the CPU.
If there was no thermal compound on the CPU/heatsink, someone has removed it. |
