Is my psu failing or perhaps my mobo?
I did post on this board a few days ago but I though I had fixed it. But I guess not. I have no way of swapping out parts so hopefully One of you can help.
When I built it would start then turn off after getting help on this bored it was determined to be shorting out, after some moving of the cables it started up and worked fine..but now on to todays problem which may not pertain to this episode. Every night I do turn off my comp both the machine then the psu after it has all turned off but do not unplug it from surge protecter. Well a few days ago some lightning passed through the night(may be a coincidence) and the next morning I went to turn it on and it would start up for about Thirty seconds then shut off(fans led everything came on), it would try to start up again but died, and again and again until I just shut it off. After checking cords and moving some(thinking I could have bumped the stand the comp sits on and knocked a wire onto the mobo) It started right up.But the mobo seemed to have reset (Its time was off and the date was back to 2001) anyway thinking it was fixed I left it on played some wow, surfed the web, etc.. for about 4-5 hours. When I left for the evening I shut it off and tried turning it on when I got home and It was doing it again. I opened the case moved wires, made sure everything was plugged in started it again, after about 10-15 seconds it shut off,but when it tried to turn it self back on it stayed on but there was no video....It has been doing that ever since (starts shuts off, starts itself back up,stays on, but no video..even when I took the video card out it still does it..so it has to be psu or mobo right? When I turn the psu on the mobo light comes on and stays on green. specs asus p5q pro turbo intel quad 9550 corsair 750 psu HIS 4890 corsair 4g (2x2gb) 800mhz ram wd black 640 |

I got back on to edit my post but you got here before I did....
I did follow that and it still does the same thing. It will turn on, but within 5-10 possibly 15 seconds it shuts off about 3-5 seconds later it turns on and stays on for the minute or two I leave it on. However there is no video...I even moved my video card to the second pci-e slot and still nothing....and i even took my video card out completely and the machine still does the same thing. |

Pull the ram too and see if it shuts itself off. If so, there's only 3 possibilities - PSU, motherboard, or CPU. This is with the motherboard out of the case and on the table with NOTHING else connected, right?

seems to be the cpu. Yes it is on the table with nothing else attached to it. I put everything back in thier boxes until I figured out what was wrong with it.
I took the motherboard and hooked only the psu up to it and turned it on and it stayed on no cutting off at all. I then plugged the graphics card in and it still stayed on. so I took the gpu out and put the processor in and It stayed on for 5-10 seconds then shut off then started back up a few seconds later turned back on and stayed on like it has been doing....so it appears to be the cpu and I will RMA it tommorow. |

It doesn't quite work that way. Without a CPU, the motherboard won't even start. Just because the power supply fan is running doesn't mean anything without a CPU. If it shuts down with only a CPU (no ram or video card) it's more likely the motherboard, but a bad CPU is *possible*.

Ok, I had just assumed when I plugged the atx 24-pin and the 4pin into the motherboard with nothing else and shorted it out to turn the mobo on and the psu fan came and never went off that it was the cpu.....But I will take your word for it.

See if a local PC shop can test your CPU. If it tests good in their bench board, the mobo is toast. Another option is to obtain a compatible CPU to test the mobo with. There really isn't any way to tell whether it's a bad mobo or bad CPU without known good parts to test with.

Look it up!
http://support.asus.com/cpusupport/c...Language=en-us Put the mobo model in the box in the upper left where it says "Keyword of MB Model". |
