Modeling/Gaming Build

Here is what I am thinking for a 3d modeling/gaming rig. I am in my last year of my game design degree and my laptop is not quite cutting it anymore. I know a workstation would be better for modeling, however I think I would prefer to have a less "constricting" setup and the workstation cards are considerably more expensive. So here is my set up I was thinking, let me know what you think.

Case Antec 1200 $259.99
Power Supply Antec 750
Motherboard Asus Pt6 Deluxe $289.99
Video Card EVGA GTX 295 Co-Op Ed $499.99
Processor i7 950 $569.99
Optical Drive Sony DVD Burner Light-Scribe $31.99
RAM Corsair Dominator DDR3 1600 (3x2gb) x2 $399.98
Hard Drive Western Digital Cavier 1TB $94.99
Operating System Windows Vista 64bit w/ Upgrade Coupon $109.99

Total $2,256.91

I think you are buying best of the best. I would go with an Asus Video card instead of Evga only for the strength and exceptional support Asus offers compared to everyone else out there.
Also I would go with an 850W power supply, I built 4 systems last month with GTX295s I tried 750W Antecs and Sea Sonics and both seem to get pretty hot under load. The 850W did much better. I would also look at Corsair power supply, they have really good quality control, about the best.
Make sure that motherboard is V2

Also make sure the hard drive is the Black, not Green or Blue.

I was looking at RAM and was wondering if there was a big enough differance between the Corsair Dominator and CORSAIR XMS3 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 to make it worth the cash. I still want to run 12gigs, but it is more of is it worth the extra 100+ for the ram?

I have yet to get a system that is not running virtual boxes to use up more than 4GB of memory. What do you plan on using that you think will take advantage of 16GB of memory? I would go for the cheaper Corsair Ram, also I highly recommend you stick with Intel's recommendation for Ram which is DDR3-800/1066 when using such an expensive processor. http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=37150

jdeb: What ram is approved for that board? The ones I was thinking about or the one that Khalil was recommending?

What is this new chip set that intel is suppose to be releasing? Would it be worth it to wait a few weeks and reconsider my build once this new chip set for motherboards is out?

The new chip is not going to be anywhere near as powerful as the i7 950. If you can afford the 950 then go for it. On the memory it is not my recommendation, it is Intel's.

I was simply stating that the memory you have listed is on the tested memory list on the manufactures website. I assume that it is ok to use in that event.

I find it interesting what Khalil says and when you click on the link he provided for the matching Intel board, they list the same types of memory as Asus for the most part.

Jdeb you are correct those processors will work with all the memory modules up to 1600 however anything more than 1066 is a waste unless OP wants to OC.
