Upgrading my build

Ok my current system is

MoBo: Asus p5q pro
Video card: GTX 280
HDD: 1TB samsung spin point
RAM: OCZ reaper HC X
case: Antec twelve hundred
cpu: intel E8500
heatsink: core contact freezer
PSU: Corsair 750w TX series

I would like to upgrade to
XFX X58i MoBo: http://www.xfxforce.com/en-gb/produc...ries/X58i.aspx

Intel Core i7 920 CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-202-_-Product

RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820227477

basically I was wondering is it just a case of taking out old ones and putting new ones in?

also, it will be xmas before I get these, willl there be new parts out by then, in same price range?

thanks in advance
Striker

That is not a cost effective upgrade at all. What is the reason for the upgrade, and how do you primarily use your computer?

Also, stay AWAY from XFX motherboards.

Primarily for gaming, what makes you say it's not cost effective?

Thanks for info on board what about ASUS rampage?

Unless you just want to burn money, what you got now is awesome and by no means slow or obsolete.
The Asus Rampage is a great motherboard but what you got now is top notch, I would wait a year or more before upgrading, I am sure by then there will be hardware out there that will be worth upgrading to.
The i7 is not a reliable platform either, nowhere near as reliabe as the Core 2 Duo combined with the P45 chipset.

I thought the i7 was much better, I shall bide my time before I add more armour to the beast :P

For gaming, a fast dual core is just as good as a quad core at the same speed. Your E8500 is faster than ANY quad core out there now.

If you want to overclock what you have (and I do NOT see any need for that for gaming - the VIDEO CARD is your limiting factor), just lock your ram at its rated speed and don't worry about it. If it's DDR2-800, it's good to 1600 CPU FSB without causing a bottleneck. A GTX 280 is PLENTY for any existing games.
