Help with my computer
So after much thought I have decided to build my own computer...that said I could use some help figuring it out. Does this set-up for it look alright? Any advice, opinions, and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You seem to be missing a processor, other than that I think you are probably going to spend too much money on this computer. What will you be using this computer for and what kind of budget do you have? Most likely you'll be able to build a computer for less than half of the cost you have above with performance quite close.

You will easily be able to buiild a really nice gaming computer for half that price. The i7 975 is kind of a rip off, it's not much faster than the i7 920 or the 8xx series of i7 which cost around a quarter of the price and can easily be overclocked to the i7 performance if you want to go that route. What kind of monitor will you be using?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824236049 I was gonna buy that one, since I currently don't have one. Also, the thing is I've never overclocked anything before, I hear about people doing it constantly, but I have no idea how to go abot doing it. I've seen a lot of people suggest in reviews and such about ocing the 920, but I don't know how so I was just gonna buy the 975.

1. Video card - if you must. It's the strongest single card on the planet.
2. Hard drive - nope. That's a server drive, the WD Black is faster and 60 bucks less. 3. Optical - OK, if you must have Blu-Ray. 4. PSU - OK, but overkill. 5. Case - good. 6. Motherboard - NO NO NO. Total overkill, and stick to Asus. The only X58 board that's known 100% stable is a P6T Deluxe V2. 7. Ram - good ram, but you don't NEED ram that expensive. Processor - if you must build a Socket 1366 i7, a 920 is plenty. The only reason to go way off the wall with those very expensive parts is for bragging rights. Functionally, you could do a build for half the price and notice very little performance difference. Maybe you have the money to blow, but wouldn't it be nice to have some left over for other things? Wait for the dust to clear and look at the new P55's that came out last week. However, if you plan on SLI (and I don't see a reason in the world to SLI a pair of 295's) they really aren't suitable due to less bandwidth on the PCI-E bus. |

Ok, thanks for all the help and advice so far guys. Taking into account all that info, does this look alright?
System: Processor- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115202 Video Card - Waitin on the ATI 5xxx Series I thnk. Pretty sure it comes out next week. Hard Drive - 2x http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136322 Optical Drive - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827136164 Power Supply - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817341028 Case - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811119160 Operating System - Windows Vista 64 Ultimate w/ W7 upgrade Motherboard - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813188048 Is that downgrade alright? What does it mean when is says 4 x16/x8 next to the PCI Express 2.0 x16 slots? I thought they were all x16? RAM memory - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145224 Last edited by glc; 09-17-2009 at 07:55 PM. |

Hard drive: Velociraptors are a waste of money. Look at the Caviar Black.
Motherboard: get an ASUS P6T Deluxe V2. Period! 3 x PCIe 2.0 x16 (at x16/x16/x1 or x16/x8/x8 mode) That means that you can run 2 slots at x16 and one slot at x1, OR one slot at x16 and 2 slots at x8. The PCI-E bus only has so much bandwidth to go around. |

Okay, thanks for all you help! The only question I have left is what RAID is and is it worth setting up if I get 2 drives?

RAID is more hassles than it's worth. If you use RAID 0 to array 2 drives, if one drive hiccups, you lose everything. If you get 2 drives, the safest thing to do is use one for the OS and applications, and the other for data.

Ok, could you define what you consider data? My definition is kinda blurred on what would things would be labeled as data.

Everything that's not Windows or software. Documents, music, videos, etc.
