My Core 2 Quad Build Thread
Well I am in need of a decent gaming computer since this one can't handle any games at all, so I did a few research and came up with this:
Motherboard: ASUS Rampage Extreme LGA 775 Intel X48 ATX Intel Motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...2E16813131334R Video Card: GeForce GTX 275 896MB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814125290 Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115207 Memory: Crucial 6GB DDR http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820148247 Hard Drive: HITACHI 0A38016 1TB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822145233 Power Supply: LOGISYS Computer PS550ABK http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817170010 ATX Full Tower: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811162054 CPU Cooler: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835150082 That's all I have for now, the monitor/keyboard and mouse don't need to worry about. Any inputs would be great, since this is my first build. Last edited by hrlptl5; 10-04-2009 at 04:30 PM. |

The X48 chipset is not stable, stick with a P45 - P5Q Turbo is recommended.
For gaming, go with a fast dual core instead of a crippled quad. E8400 or E8500 is recommended. If you want a GOOD quad, get a Q9550. With P45, you need a 2x2 kit of DDR2-800, any major brand that's on the Asus QVL. Logisys power supplies are not quality units, you need a good one for that hungry video card, look at Corsair. You do not need a CPU cooler unless you are heavily overclocking. WD Black drives are better than Hitachis. |

It supports 16gb but there aren't any 4gb DDR2 modules out there. Effective limit is 8gb.

Those are the first 4gb modules I've seen that weren't just for servers.
