All you can do with a name brand computer is max out the ram, replace the power supply with a stronger model, and add a video card. If it has all of a sudden become VERY SLOW and is crashing, you probably have software and/or malware issues - which a total wipe and reinstall will take care of.

ok i think that is doable
i was thinks to spend mabey 400 on parts for it. if i dont need to spend that much that would be cool then i can buy a new monitor and keyboard can you recomend any? also is the procesesor any good for gaming or does that need an upgrade to? Last edited by jonnyboy; 10-09-2009 at 06:56 PM. |

That is not a slow processor, the AMD 5000 is quite capable for most applications. This machine with an ATI 4650 will be really fast unless you are a big time 3D gamer. I would definately replace the power supply as glc suggested, gateway use really cheap power supplies. I recomend going with a Sea Sonic, FSP or Antec for this system.

It really depends on what screen resolution and what settings you want to play Crysis. Crysis is the most video intensive game out there and even people with single $500 Nvidia 295 cards cannot run this game at high resolutions, high framerates and high game settings. To run the fastest high end video cards you need a PSU with a minimum of a true 650 watts with 6 pin and 8 pin video card connectors. The Antec 430 watt PSU you chose does not have the power to run a very high end video card like a 295.
I would not get my hopes up about running Crysis except at low resolutions, low frame rates and low game settings, unless you are willing to spend about $800 for a high end card and a high end PSU. That's just the nature of the beast. There are plenty of other games out there that don't have anywhere near as high of graphics processing requirements.

430W wont do much with a big video card, the Asus ATI 4870 1GB plays Crysis very well but you will need at least 500W, as David M suggested not even a GTX295 can play that game in full mode however the card I am suggesting will give you an enjoyable experience with the game at a reasonable price.

I think it would be much safer if you bought your ram from the configurator at Crucial.com.
http://www.crucial.com/store/listpar...x?model=GM5472 The ram you have chosen is NOT COMPATIBLE. Buy the 2gb kit of PC2-5300 for an exact match to what you have. |

Add one item at a time. I would start with the power supply, it has the most connections and will connect to all existing pieces. this will verify you made all connections properly and will also help with determinating what went wrong, if it does happen. Power up your system before going to the next step.
If all goes well, power down and change ram next. You should be able to do both sticks at the same time. Power on the system. If no problems, power down again, add your video card. Power up the system, boot into bios and look for a setting to disable the onboard video. You may also have to set the system to select(enable) pci-e. Power on the sytem. Verify good. Power down. Hook up the monitor. Go get updated drivers for your card.

The first thing you need to do is save any files you need to an external drive, DVD's, whatever you have.
Then you need to see how Gateway is set up for system recovery. It may have a recovery partition. You may have to use the restore media that came with it. Hint: Read the manual! |

Yep, no problem, and the PSU is strong enough.
