Hello everyone,
Okay so I bought this custom $4k computer in 2004, and about 6 months ago decided to upgrade it. This is the setup now (note: the word "old" next to a component means it's from the original 2004 setup but is being used in the new setup): ___________________________________________ "The Beast Ultimatum" Specs SILVERSTONE DA700 700W ATX SLI Certified CrossFire Ready Modular Power Supply GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3R LGA 775 Intel P45 Intel Motherboard Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 Yorkfield 2.83GHz Quad-Core Processor W/ ZEROtherm CF800 92mm CPU Cooler (All cores idle between 43-44°C) SAPPHIRE Vapor-X Radeon HD 4870 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 Video Card (Idles at 58°C) Samsung HDTV (connected w/ HDMI) & a 17" monitor OCZ Platinum 8GB (4 x 2GB) DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel *(old) PLEXTOR PX-712A DVD-RW *(old) Thermaltake Tsunami Dream Case W/ 2 120mm & 1 60MM fans Hard Drives: *(old) WD 740GD 74 SATA 10K Raptor 70GB internal (OS drive) *(old) Two 250GB western digital 2500JD internals (storage) *(old) Seagate 1.5TB USB 2.0 External *(old) Two Seagate FreeAgent Pro 500GB eSATA Externals *(old) Fantom Drive Titanium 500GB External Other: Sandisk Extreme FireWire CF Card Reader *(old) Bella vegas editing keyboard Running Win 7 64bit RC _________________________________________________ Now the problem... it's randomly freezing, it will be fine for hours then freeze, the freeze is a total lockup with looping audio if I'm playing any, keyboard & mouse freeze, it locks up for about 30-40 seconds then comes back. There's no BSOD or error of any kind and after a lockup it's fine for hours again. I've done a Ramprobe for about 10 hours twice with no errors. I've updated all the drivers for everything. and a hand full of other things but nothing has worked, so now I come for help .~Sam (P.S. Could a failing hard drive maybe cause OS freezing?) |

Are you overclocking anything?
If you suspect a hard drive, test it with manufacturer's utility. |

A couple of things i noted in your post.
Looping Audio... have you tried disabling the audio in bios(assuming your using on board) If so what happens? If you have a sound card, what about trying on board sound? Win 7 RC.... does it get updates? If so, maybe an update didn't work with..? Have you tried removing the other drives the OS is not installed on. Or maybe you could partition one of the other drives and load your OS to it for troubleshooting purposes. it doesn't sound like your pc is locking up, it seems more like it needs time to catch up. which seems strange cause you'e got plenty of processing power and ram.

Yeah rwest that's what I was thinking, it's more like watching a youtube video on slow internet and waiting for it to buffer... okay well I'll try a hard drive test and let you know, that's to bad I hope it's not the drive cause it's my only 10K drive... oh well.
Thanks for the reply's all, ~SamFTech |

Try slowing the ram down to 800 speed and/or give it a bit more voltage.
