Finally, going to build a PC!
Well, I have had it with 3 yr old Macbook, and with Windows 7 coming out next week I have decided to make a return to PC gaming. I made a thread over a year ago, but plan to go through with it this time.
This PC will be mainly for gaming (Team Fortress 2, L4D 2, AION, Final Fantasy 14 Online when released), perhaps with some added entertainment (movies, video streaming). I am not dead set on a processor, either AMD or Intel works for me but I have always been a fan of Intel. I will require the works including monitor (as my HDTV is at a weird angle for me to use at my monitor(1920 x 1080 resolution), keyboard/mouse, and speakers (preferably built into the monitor as I will use a headset/phones most of the time and want to reduce desk clutter). Budget: $1000-1100 max, got a check coming for some money that is owed to me from college tuition payments. Thanks in advance. |

Consider this monitor : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824009157
I can't really justify buying it for myself but, if I could, I would have ordered it long ago.

Here is a gaming build list for around $1000 before shipping, taxes and mail in rebates, which includes the actual computer, monitor (with integrated speakers), OS (vista HP SP1 x86 with windows 7 upgrade; if you wait a few days you may be able to get just windows 7 straight) and keyboard and mouse:

That would push your budget a bit but if you can stretch it then 8 GB would be plenty and your games, the most recent ones, will benefit.

Get the 750GB WD Caviar Black, it's actually cheaper than the 640GB version right now..

I'm going to order the parts later this week, if anything I'll just hold off on Windows 7 if it doesn't appear on newegg right away so I can save some money and use the student discount.
Hmm, to go Intel or AMD. From what I've read the E8500 isn't much different than the i5 processors right now in terms of the lower priced ones, pretty much making the low end i5, E8500 and Phenom II comparable? |

I plan to order the parts tonight, quick question (going with Masaki's list with an additional 2x2GB RAM for 8 total) ,
I could use the processor he recommended, AMD Phenom II X3 720 2.8GHz Socket AM3 95W Triple-Core Black Processor Model HDZ720WFGIBOX or go with the quad core Khalil recommended for a few dollars more, AMD Athlon II X4 630 Propus 2.8GHz Socket AM3 95W Quad-Core Processor Model ADX630WFGIBOX Would I gain any advantage between the 4 cores over the 3? And I assume the same motherboard is compatible since you both recommended the same one. |

I guess I will just go for the 4 cores, no specific reason except the bigger number of cores appeals to me :-/. This is my final list ....

I might hold off on purchasing the OS until Windows 7 is officially released, seems easier than going though the coupon process. |

Looks good to me; since it's so close to launch date (last I checked it was Oct. 22), it may be a better option to just get windows 7 when it comes out.

I actually lucked out. After submitting my school email to Microsoft they gave me the promotional code, just ordered my backup DVD of Windows 7 Home 64bit. $43 after the backup disk, not a bad deal
