Little advice requested
I'm wondering what, if any, upgrade options would show me a performance increase for gaming? The only thing that I can think of would be CPU but since my board is limited to 1066 officially, I'm kind of limited. The CPU Support list on GigaBytes site show support for 1333 CPU's but that's overclocked. I'm running my current E6600 @ 3.2GHz no problem right now though so I don't know that upgrading the processor would really even help unless I went with a quad.
What do you think? Upgrade this or put the $$ towards a new mobo and CPU? CURRENT SYSTEM E6600 @ 3.2GHz 8GB DDR2 EVGA GTX260 Superclocked Core 216 GA-965P-DS3

I think you are close to ideal for a socket 775 system for gaming; upgrading from what you have isn't going to get you much of an improvement in gaming. Probably the best option is to save up money and get a new build in a few years.

If you do any upgrade, get a new mobo and a stronger video card - you are probably being limited by PCI-E 1.0 now.

I remember doing some research around the net when I first purchased the GTX260 and I'm pretty sure I had read that the performance loss by using a PCI-E 2.0 card in a 1.0 slot was going to about 5%. Not a huge deal.
That being said, I had forgotten about that little "incompatability" with my system. I think I'm probably better off getting a new motherboard and processor, possibly doing an i5 for kicks, and snag an i7 for that socket when they roll out... if they haven't already. I'm aware that I'll need some new RAM but that's fine. At least by going this route I can hand the kids my 775 setup for gaming and finally retire my 939 gamer with the good but definately aging 6800GT AGP video card. Thanks for the tips folks. I always value the opinions I see on these forums. I may not post as much as some but I am constantly lurking. |

The i7 for P55 is out. Look at an Asus P7P55D and the i7-860.

Thanks for the heads up.
Looks like the egg has a combo deal on the processor and board too. Last edited by KilluminatiStyle; 10-25-2009 at 12:02 AM. |
