I know there are a lot of threads out there right now that are exactly like this one but I am a little confused about compatibility between parts, best brand names and even determining which component is better than the next.
I would like to keep my build around $1000 but I can jump as high as $1300 if there is something I should absolutely get. I will mostly be using this computer for gaming (or at least that is the only thing that will be taxing the system). My games of choice are Half Life 2, Civilization and World of Warcraft. I got a new video card about 10 months ago in my old dell computer and I believe it blew out the power supply. Is there any way I can make sure the drive is still good if I don't have a working computer at the moment? Nvidia GeForce 7950 GT/512 mb http://www.nvidia.com/page/geforce_7950.html (I have not been able to find a link to buy this video card) I also have a wireless internet card that is only 2 years old and can be transfered to the new computer. Belkin Wireless G Plus Desktop Card http://www.belkin.com/IWCatProductPa...duct_Id=429050 I will be able to get my OS through my girlfriends sisters college Windows 7 64 Bit - $37 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pieces that I have seen that look good (I don't own these yet) LITE-ON Black 24X DVD+R 24X DVD-R SATA Black 24X DVD Writer LightScribe Support http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106335 I would like a hard drive at between 640-750 gigs ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I do not need any extras like a moniter, mouse, keyboard or speakers. If there is a good website that explains compatibility point me in its direction. Thank you for the help |

Hey, I am not sure if that is just a generiac build you have for people looking for a gaming computer. My main worry is, are those components compatable with my video card that I already have. I see you included a video card in your post.

Your 7950GT will work with glc's build no problem. But if you can afford that budget, go with newer tech. That card is a few generations old. For games, you'll see better performance with a new card.

So it would be better to lessen the amount I can spend on other things like the CPU and the motherboard and get a better video card. ok

That's true. But for a $1000 budget, you are already getting a very good bang for the buck. We always recommend not buying the absolute top-end anyway, because you can usually get 90% of the performance for much much less.

Your graphics card has the greatest influence on your gaming performance. I think glc picked a good graphics card for your budget. The new GPU's on the Radeon 5000 series cards are state of the art and the card is very competitively priced. Sell your old graphics card, its not going to do much for you gaming wise.

See my comment about your video card in your other thread. A 5770 will completely blow the doors off a 7950.

For gaming, you might consider a monitor larger than 18 inches. You can get a good quality 22 inch monitor for $200. http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/p...9&sku=320-7438
Go with the graphics card glc mentioned. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...on=5770+radeon You can install the upgrade version of Windows 7 over Vista but you need the full version if you want to replace XP with Windows 7. There is no upgrade from XP to Windows 7. Just get the full OEM version of Win 7 you have listed. Last edited by David M; 11-04-2009 at 02:25 PM. |

Is there no difference between those 4 cards? I was looking at the specs earlier and they all look exactly the same, is the difference just the look of the drive then?
I was also told to get a ASUS P7P55D motherboard. There are a few of them which range in price from $129 to almost $300. Do I just choose one in the middle? Lastly, for the sound card I was looking at... SIIG IC-710012-S2 7.1 Channels 24-bit 96KHz PCI Interface SoundWave http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16829270006 ...mostly because it is only $35 and I don't need amazing sound, I never blast music or anything. So I will edit out the Windows 7 upgrade for just the baisc OS. Should I get the DVD player that can also do CD's? I know I have seen the LITE-ON black reccomended in other posts. |

I'm recommending the plain P7P55D. The onboard sound is as good as that card, you don't need it. Either the Sony or the Lite-On DVD burner is fine. Get the Diamond version of the 5770 for best support. Make sure that ram is on the QVL for that motherboard, you can download the QVL at the Asus support site.

Is this one the plain version of P7P55D?
ASUS P7P55D LE LGA 1156 Intel P55 ATX Intel Motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-410-_-Product The onboard sound? So I don't need a sound card? Which thing has the sound ports? QVL=Qualified Vendor List(I will check it once I am 100% sure which motherboard) |

No, that's the LE version.
The sound ports are on the ATX block. |

Lol, I apologize for my ignorance, sometimes I think I may be getting in over my head. I looked at all 10 ASUS P7P55D and they all say, deluxe, pro, le. I have absolutely no idea which one is the normal one. I also have no idea what the ATX block is.
