Do I need a HD to check this?
I have a eMachine T5026 that the needs a new P/S. I have also used the HD from that computer in another computer. Once before when a P/S went out on a eMachine it took the M/B with it. So my question is, if I put a new P/S in the T5026 "without" the HD will I be able to tell if the M/B is ok? Thanks for your reply.

If you're using a good working power supply, and of course you have your RAM and CPU connected, and your monitor of course...then yes, you should be able to tell whether or not your MB is working by whether or not it POSTs.
You'll get beeps. You'll most likely get hardware info scrolling on your screen, and you'll be able to get into the BIOS. Everything it would normally do until it tries to boot to the hdd. |

That is good news. I just didn't want to spend for a HD at this time. Thanks again!

The new P/S came today. I installed it and turned the computer on. Everything was connected but no hard drive. There was not any signal from the onboard video but the ligths on the cd/dvd drives blinked off and on and all fans worked. I put in a live c-d of linux but it did not load. What do you think, should I buy a hard drive and try it?

emachines are famous for failing psu's taking out the mobo. Their Bestec psu's have no surge protection. I'd suspect the mobo has failed too. Save your money.

I'd recommend you start looking for a new computer, not just a motherboard.

glc thanks for you reply. You would be right if I didn't have other computers. I have a new one running win 7 and others running xp and linux. But since I have never built one maybe I could use the usable parts from this one and do that. Just trying to keep this old brain from going stale.

Choose the parts to recycle carefully - most eMachines components are substandard.
