quadcore upgrade/rebuild help?
Heya guys, I've been looking to upgrade/rebuild my computer that I built back in late spring 2007. This first build was a gaming PC, but now I'm not looking to make it into a dedicated gamer like my first build. It will essentially be a brand new computer that I'm looking to build with as some of the parts are starting to show some age.
I currently run an AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ @ 2.6 Ghz Have to recheck exact Mobo but it is MSI built. SATA 250GB WD Caviar HD @ 7200rpm XFX nVIDIA 8800GT 512MB Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi XtremeGamer 2GB OCZ DDR2 1066 RAM(1x2GB, other 2GB stick just died on me like 2-3 weeks ago havent bothered to replace yet. And this is actually what got me thinking into replacing whole system basically) OCZ PSU 600W Antec 900 Case Have monitor/keyboard/mouse/headphones as well. Essentially, I want to upgrade processor/mobo/maybe GFX and be able to run Win7 64bit As far as brand goes, I'm in college so $$$ is a bit of an issue, but I kinda prefer AMD over Intel. However I'm open to just about anything. |

If you'll check my sig you'll see that my specs are similar to yours.
Currently more ram and a 'new' Radeon but close. I just installed Win7 64 bit Home Premium, it runs perfectly and, except for an older SATA drive my Windows scores, for how well the computer will run Win7 are 6 - 7+. In short, you need ram, you may want a new video card, you may possibly need a new HDD but that machine is more than up to the job of running Windows 7. If you really want to go quad-core now then give us a budget to work with. Oh, and congrats, with a student discount your price for Win7 will be $30 - $50 depending on whether you go Home or Pro when you buy the upgrade. My computer gets used for everything and gaming too ( currently the Left4Dead2 demo).

that said, I know I can get the student discount right, but I'm not sure if it's a download/disc and whether or not I'm able to get the 64bit version of Win7?
But yea, I want to run like 4GB of ram like I was before until that other stick died on me =/ I'm just not sure what pros/cons are to upgrading to quadcore now. I know when I built this machine back in 07, quad cores were just getting introduced and I went with a midranged processor at the time. Just to throw a budget out there though, say $900 roughly give or take $50 etc |

Masaki's list is pretty good but hold off on the video card.
Radeon prices for the two high-end cards are up because of shortages but if you can wait they're going to drop and nVidia prices for their cards will have to follow suit. That 8800 card will do a good job for awhile longer and you'll save cash when you do buy. There aren't many programs out yet optimized for a quad core but they're obviously coming. Microsoft has had to discontinue the download so you'll be buying a copy on disk : http://www.microsoft.com/student/en/...windows-7.aspx Your school IT guys should have all the information you need. |

that is the mobo I currently have. It is AM2/AM2+ which if I'm correct, I can put this processor in there? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103471 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145247 and keep with DDR2 RAM for now. Would let me just upgrade the major parts instead of having to upgrade cpu/mobo/ram as well video card, I'm content right now with the 8800GT, however I'll upgrade that sooner or later. Maybe after my tax return in a few months |
