Question Editing videos and photos

I am trying to help my son arrive at the right computer to meet his needs. I am a believer in the forum and would like to have your opinions.

Can you folks recommend a computer approach of components that are best for editing videos and photos?

Also, which would be better a Pc or a Mac?

What software would he be using? That would likely determine which platform and what hardware

Question Asus/Pegatron motherboard

HP offers a model e9280t computer with a Asusa/Pegatron IPMTB-TK Intel X58 socket 1366 motherboard.

I would appreciate any positive/negative comments on this motherboard?

Should I stay away from it?

Will some of you please recommend a better performing motherboard even if it costs double or triple the price? Primary interest is for editing videos and photos plus gaming.

Would I be better off having a custom computer built?

Red face Editing Videos and Photos

What is the best software for editing high quantities of videos and photos? Price is not an issue at this time.

If you want a name brand prebuilt computer, get a Dell. Otherwise, I see you are in San Diego, which has tons of small computer shops. Go get one custom built, and you will have local service and support.

*THREE* threads merged and moved to BYOPC. Let's keep this all in one place, please.

How much experience do you have with editing?

For videos, the best of the best is either Apple's Final Cut Express/HD/Pro (for Macs only) or Adobe Premiere (for PCs or Macs; there are demos available for premiere that you can try before buying). Avid is also in the mix, but some people like it and some people don't.

Down in the $50-$150 range, Pinnacle has some decent stuff to work with. They probably have demos available as well.

As for photo editing, what sorts of things were you looking to do?

It all really depends on what type of movies you are wanting to create, and any certain features or effects that you want your movie to have

If you're looking for an easy way to piece together your videos, I would suggest you start with Windows Movie Maker. This is included with recent versions of Windows. It will help you create a single movie from multiple files.

Windows Movie Maker lets you select options for video type and file size. It also offers rudimentary video effects. For someone new to video editing, it is ideal. As mentioned, you can combine clips and photos to make some professional looking slideshows easily.

Adobe Premiere is designed for professionals for making REALLY professional movies. It has a learning curve and it's going to put a serious hole in your wallet. Adobe offers Premiere Elements (a stripped-down version of Premiere for the average Joe). It is extremely powerful.

Lets talk about Windows Movie Maker. If you think creatively, you can do a lot with it. Example, take a photo, start it as Black and White, fade into Color, and then fade it into a watercolor to close your video, all those filters are there and easy. Creativity is the key. I've seen guys use $1000 software and their movie came out really crappy. But yet I've seen guys use Movie Maker to create some jaw-dropping movies. It's all about creativity and experience.

Price not a major issue, I'd look at building a computer around an Asus P7P55D and an i7-860 processor. That's as fast as it gets these days without spending twice as much on the processor and considerably more on the motherboard.

He intends to use Adobe Premiere software. He is 54 years old. He currently uses Photoshop Professional and works on information systems operations with Dell computers. I would like to see him get a custom computer.

Overall objectives for a new computer are as follows:

1. Plans for computer to use MS Office – Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
2. Photoshop (currently have CS would like to upgrade to CS 4)
3. Want to get into video editing to combine photos, video, and audio soundtracks. Would start with Adobe Premiere Elements and would like to move into Premiere Pro. Originally thought of using Pennicle software
4. Would like to use a database software like FilemakerPro
5. Would like to burn photos, videos, to DVD and maybe Blu-Ray although I don’t currently have a Blu-Ray player
6. May want to migrate into HD video editing in the future
7. May want HD TV capability in future, not urgent right now
8. Not overly into gaming but may like to sometime. Would like to run my Combat Flight Simulator 2 software or upgrade it.

At present cost is not an issue. I want an excellent performing and reliable custom made computer. Can some of you please suggest computer components consistent with these objectives?

Thank you all very much.

CS4 applications will run in Windows 7. I checked that. Professional doesn't cost much more, I suppose that wouldn't hurt.

I want to thank you very much for your recommendations. They sound great.

Please pardon my stupid questions. I notice from your recommendations that you list only one drive, the Blu-ray burner. Should we also have other drives such as DVD and CD drives? If so how many more and what kind of additional drives would you recommend for maximum overall computer performance?

I notice that most cases have many multiple slots for drives. Why do people use so many drives?

The Blu-ray burner will also read and burn CD's and DVD's. I suppose if you wanted a second drive, get a regular DVD burner.

Here's a freebie:

That said, I believe Adobe Premiere Elements can burn DVD's and I know Premiere Pro can burn DVD's and Blurays.

The difference in performance between the i7-860/P55 and i7-920/X58 is slight unless you do some serious tweaking. The P55 platform is more stable, the X58 is designed for tweakers and overclockers. You also don't need the Deluxe model of the motherboard, the standard P7P55D will do everything you need. Just trying to save you some money where you don't need to spend more. If you really must have X58, the most stable board is the P6T Deluxe V2.

Any size WD Black is fine. They are probably the fastest and most reliable mainstream drives right now. If you need a very high capacity storage-only drive, the big Green drives are good. EDIT: Note that with the software you are using, 3 drives are recommended - one OS/software, one data, and one scratch drive. I apologize for not indicating that up front.

In the future, you may want to look at replacing your OS/software drive with a SSD, when the prices come down and they have better reliability. People using Intel X25 drives now are quite happy, but I'm advising that you hold off for about a year. They do need special care, running Windows Defrag will kill them, for example. You also have to wipe them to update the firmware.

I read that the P6T Deluxe V2 is not approved by Microsoft for Windows 7. Is that true?

Fully supported but not certified, it was introduced before Windows 7 was released. The P7P55D is certified.

I don't know what this means. Does this mean I can't use Windows 7 with P6T Deluxe V2?

Yes you can - Asus has a full set of Windows 7 drivers on their website ("fully supported"). I simply answered your question about "approved by Microsoft" ("certified").
