Improving computer surfing

I don't have a lot of knowledge about computers,so i thought this one be a good place to come.I own a T2245 emachine computer with 256MB of ram. The longer i have it the more slower it runs or takes to surf the internet.I've had Macafee and Norton antivirus removers, and i still don't see that much of an improvement. Can anyone give me some information that might be helpful? Also, has anyone heard of Uniblue registry booster that's suppose to improved computer use.

Regarding software, there is nothing you can do short of installing a small distribution of linux to improve web surfing. The hardware you currently have just can't keep up with the newer programs and websites. Upgrading your ram would help a good bit (to 1GB would be enough), however your other hardware is very slow, so even upgrading the ram, it may still be very slow. If possible take a look at getting a new computer (preferably build it yourself or get a local computer shop to build it for you). If you just need something for surfing the internet, you can get a pretty good computer for around $200 if you are ok with using linux (linux doesn't cost anything, runs pretty fast and is very easy to use if you are just using it for basic tasks like web surfing; you also don't need an anti-virus for linux).

Uninstall Norton and McAfee, and don't bother with Uniblue. The best thing to install for an antivirus that's both free and doesn't have a huge footprint is Avira.

However, what you REALLY need to do is upgrade your RAM. Max it out, order two 1gb modules.

That is a pretty old computer.

How fast you expect a 2.2 Gig Celeron to be? I think it uses PC2100 RAM. Someone you know may have some old RAM that can work in it. You can buy some old ram somewhere. I would not try to use RAM in too large of size in this.

I did not see an indication of how many RAM slots the motherboard had or whether it was used in pairs.

If you have XP update it as much as possible to 3rd update pack or whatever they call it. That might help a bit. AVG free anti-virus might be suitable. Most important is to install all of the security updates from Microsoft Updates. Sometimes after going to the next higher update pack you need to reinstall the Anti-virus Software.

Also try something like spyware search and destroy. It can stop a lot of Worms.

I have a similar computer that kind of still runs. I put some back-up files on it.

If you click on my link to Crucial's site, that's the page for that computer and all that information is there.

According to the Crucial advisor, it can take up to 2x1GB PC2700. My girlfriend has the same PC and I'm looking into at least one stick for that.
