Sub $300 Build
I have been pretty busy the last few years and stopped following technology with computers. One of my coworkers needs a desktop computer and already has a monitor. Since we are teachers we also have free OS (I would prefer to build a Windows 7 machine) and Office software. I tried to search the forums for computers under $300 but didn't see too much.
The person I am building the computer for does not game, but I don't want onboard video. It will basically be a work computer, so even a microATX board would do. I always use Intel builds, nothing against AMD, but I am not changing now. I really need to start posting here again more, after 1 or 2 years without buying computer parts I feel completely lost! If a $300 build is not possible for a Windows 7 machine I might push her to a Dell. Thanks for any help!

What exactly do you mean by a "work" computer? If she's just using basic office apps, and not doing any gaming or hd video editing, I don't see why you need a graphics card. The integrated graphics on most modern system boards (even just the mid-range ones) are perfectly fine for normal office usage.

What someone calls a "work" computer, eventually turns into a computer for photo and video editing. I know for a fact that she has a digital camcorder, so I always build computers for what people may use.

Ok, she wants to keep it at $300 and is fine with onboard video. Which means I can lower the PSU requirements. How would 2 GB handle Windows 7?

This is as cheap as I think as I can make it without sacrificing quality. Any other suggestions? |

I was just putting together a list almost exactly like yours, lol. That looks like a good build, and is probably as close as you're going to get to $300. Only other change I would say is that you can probably go with a 350W PSU instead of the 400...but that's probably only going to make a difference of a few bucks anyway. You're not going to get below $350.

Hi discodanman45
I'm just finishing up a budget build myself. I also have not built anything in a few years. You can save about $20 by getting the E5200 off of Amazon (Tiger Direct via Amazon ) it's 39.99 + 2.99 shipping there. and every little bit of savings helps these days. http://www.amazon.com/Intel-Pentium-.../ref=pd_cp_e_1 peace Dave |
