Built New PC WINDOWS 98SE not booting
I built a New PC with following parts.
Case: Thermlatake Armor VA8000B MB: Gigabyte EP45-UD3P CPU: Intel Quad Q8200 RAM: G.SKILL 4GB DDR2 800 Video Card: MSI N9400GT I put the HARD DISK and DVD-WRITER from my old pc into this New PC. These are working fine in my old pc. HARD DISK is having WINDOWS 98SE OS. I wanted to make WINDOWS 98SE work on my New PC so that later I can upgrade to either XP or 7. I got only 1 IDE port on this new MB. HARD DISK - made it as MASTER DVD WRITER - set it as SLAVE After installation When I switched the power on NEW PC all the parts are working good, including CASE fans, CPU fan. HARD DISK LED is also glowing. In the BIOS setup it is showing all the parts such as HARD DISK from western digital, DVD WRITER from HP, RAM as 4098MB. I also set the First Boot device as HARD DISK and Second Boot Device as CDROM (There was no option to select DVD-WRITER). Pressed F10 (Save and Exit). When it was Booting I got WINDOWS 98 LOGO (FULL SCREEN) and after that I am getting blank screen with just cursor blinking. Nothing is happening. I also went into Command prompt and checked C:\>DIR/P and it is showing all the files from the HARD DISK. Then I tried AUTOEXEC and it is showing me below prompts and stopped. Nothing is happening. C:\>SET BLASTER=A220 I7 D1 H7 P330 T6 C:\>SET SBPCI=C:\SBPCI C:\> Is it something which I am missing, or the MB does not support WINDOWS 98SE? What should I do if I have only 1 IDE port? Shall I connect only HARD DISK? But still I am not sure if it is going to boot because the system is detecting HARD DISK but not booting. Does it make difference if I put secondary device as DVD-WRITER or DVD ROM or CD ROM? I do not have any Boot CD and not sure if it still works because WINDOWS 98SE is already installed in the HARD DISK. Please help... Thanks |

The processor may be too fast for Windows 98SE. As I recall, there was a 2.4 GH limit on Windows 98.

Thanks RayH, can you please suggest me next steps for New PC to work?
I will put NEW HARD DRIVE (sata) and remove the WINDOWS 98SE hard drive. Order NEW WINDOWS XP (OEM) operating system and load from DVD-WRITER drive. Do you think will it work? Do I need to do anything with NEW HARD DRIVE? Will the MotherBoard recognize it? Thanks |
